OIZUMI: Crimes committed by Brazilians are drawing huge media attention in Japan. It reflects the growing number of Brazilians living in Japan. Brazilian couples, friends and children can be spotted easily in some cities in Japan. They are concentrated in areas near large-scale factories, in towns and cities in Aichi and Shizuoka Prefectures, and in and around Gunma Prefecture.
There are around 300,000 Brazilians living in Japan today. It is the third largest foreign population following the Chinese and the Koreans, and most of the Brazilians are Japanese Brazilians. Oizumi Town in Gunma Prefecture has the highest density of Brazilian residents at about 5000. And there are around 100 shops and restaurants catering to their needs.
