I seek the wisdom of the people here who experienced studying, currently studying and living in Japan.
I am currently studying IT course in one of the Junior College somewhere in Kanagawa. I am about to graduate next year but I didn't take seriously my study during my 1st year in school( I have reasons but Its a long story to write here ) and ended me feeling like I am not learning anything anymore. For that reason I'm not sure If I am capable of getting a Job here. Yeah I dont have the confidence to find a Job. But I dont want to waste the money my Mom spent just for me to continue my study here. So I want to know what is the best thing to do. I had this matter confessed to my mother already and of course she felt sad when I told her about it.
Now Im thinking of two things to traverse: Either try to find a job or go and study again at a different University with the course I like. Im very confuse what to do now so I decided to write and seek help here.
If I am going to study I am also am confuse if I should computer science in 4 Years University take Animation, Computer Graphics in Technical Schools.
I love Gaming and Animation very much and want to work to Companies like Squaresoft or Namco in the Future. I dont know what course to take in order to yield myself to be competent enough to enter in those mentioned Companies.
All the Information and advices will be appreciated.
Hullo Iro_otoko13!:)
Hmmn, I dunno what to say... I guess the best advice is that it is not yet too late to do your best studying whatever it is you are trying to study.
You still got some time to prepare yourself, but don't waste it anymore. Confidence should not be a problem, just think that you don't have any options left, let's see if you'll not be able to face anything. Sometimes when people think that they could depend on others, or when they know they have other options, it is easier for them to tell themselves, "oh well, i'll just do the other thing." They do that until they are left with no more options, or if there are still some left, most of them are no good anymore. When we think there are still time, options, or people we can depend on, we tend to say to ourselves "it's gonna be fine", but in reality it won't - it is just gonna get worst.
Sometimes people need to get pressured, or they need to think there won't be another chance coming - the limit has come, or they need to think there isn't anybody left to depend on. That's the time when they'll do their best, or when they stand up and face anyone and have "confidence" - whatever that means. When it comes to this, there is just nothing else to do but do our best. That being said, I wish you luck and hard work on anything that you decided to do. ;)

Hello Iro otoko,
If you want to work in games, you need to fulfill a few things:
You need to be proficient in any 3d application. If you aren't you have to compliment the lack of experience with skills in illustration, animation and the willingness to learn 3D or 2D at a short period of time.
Companies like ours, we do not descriminate on educational attainment but most of our employees are either graduates of senmon gakkos or technical schools specializing in Multimedia, Digital Illustration, 3D or game planning or development.
We also have people who came from unrelated backgrounds, the bottomline is - the demo reel. We need to see what you can do and capable of doing. While you can prepare one on your own - if you have the equipment at home - this is where technical schools excel - they do not only teach but also help students prepare their demo reels - something like your thesis in colleges. Technical Colleges are stepping stones and a very exensive one to boot! (Cost ranges to at least 3 Million yen and above)
If you are already in Japan and have a legal permit to work and stay - then you might have a chance getting into games as long as you fulfill some of the things I mentioned above.
Now for people coming from the Philippines - its very hard to get into the game or animation business easily because companies seldom look out unless they have a branch or a local subsidy outside the country.
There are also restrictions with regards to visas - no matter how good you are - even if you have a sponsor, as long as you don't have a college diploma or a ten year experience in that field - you will not be issued an appropriate visa.
Since you are graduating soon, I'd advice you to use that as a pawn - find work or arbaitos that will support your next venture. Either go to a technical college without causing meiwaku to your benefactors or buy equipment to help you create demo reels to send out to companies.
The latter is what I did when I was looking out for game companies to move on a decade ago.
My last advice is - to never be blinded by the elegance of the industry as you read them or hear from the news. Its not really a glamorous work. Games and Animation is lots of sweat and pain. If you have a short pisi - it might not be for you. But if you enjoy the thoughts of excellence and never-ending will to ganbaru - well animation is such a wonderful world!

And oh, my last and last advice (and you can take it to the wrangler's bank!)
If you ever try to get employed in the games or animation industry - choose a smaller one for a start. That's where you can be a BIG fish in a small pond, rather than be a small fish in a vast ocean where thousands like you can be lost in the wilderness doing similar things and eventually be eaten alive by the BIGGER sharks!
The bigger companies may look good in your resume but more of the outstanding work and experience you can only get from smaller ones who do most of the dirty work for these bigger ones. (Don't tell them I told you the secret!)

LOL!!
I have not thought that I could also swim the ilog instead of using rocks to get to the other side!!! Pag wala ng rocks n matutungtungan, I have no choice but to swim the ilog kaya lang baka malakas current at maanod ako!
