hello,
how does a teacher currently based in the phils come to japan and work as a teacher? (english or other) tourist first then convert? or are there companies that sponsor pinoy teachers to come to japan on work/instructor visas?
salamat in advance for your advice. i tried reading through the posts but latest update would be nice.

1-the most common teaching position here is the ALT (assistant language teacher). unless you're talking about PhD-level education that can pass for university positions.
2-for an ALT, the person in the philippines can apply to english/language agencies based here in japan through the internet. these agencies do sponsor visas. kaya lang i'm not too optimistic with this kasi (1) they prefer "native" english speakers --- americans, canadians, australians..., and (2) if ever they do show interest in you (kasi filipinos are considered "native-level" english speakers), the japanese embassy would be requiring you to show proof that you've studied english (as a major subject) for at least 12 years. as in hindi lang as a subject you're having since elementary... i know of an agency here in japan which sponsored filipinos before (almost all of them have learned nihongo) but all of their recruits were denied visas by the embassy. since then, these agencies have avoided recruiting filipinos due to the english education requirement.
3-you can come here first as a tourist (or visiting relative) and apply. some agencies sponsor visas, and the immigration office here is more linient than the embassy there. pero the problem is competition from native english speakers (and dami nila dito and many agencies prefer to recruit from abroad over pinoys already in japan), and competition from other filipinos here who have some other kind of visa (student, japanese descendant, spouse or permanent visa). kumokonti na ang pinoy dito na may blue-collared jobs dahil dumadami na ang pinoy ALTs. their advantage over you is that (1) they have already valid visas, iko-convert na lang into instructor's or other kinds of work visa, (2) they can already speak and understand nihongo, (3) most of them have either a valid japanese driver's license here or can commute to work via the japanese transport system, and (4) the agency need not worry much about the ALT's housing, health insurance, etc.
hirap ano? if your friend really wants to work here, i think the caregiving career is now easier to enter. mag-aral na lang sya dyan ng caregiving, plus nihongo.
hope i've been of help.
