Filipino diplomat caught shoplifting music player, Gucci perfume in South Korea?

A Filipino diplomat was allegedly caught on camera shoplifting at a duty free store inside a US military base in South Korea.

The Korea Herald, a leading daily in South Korea, said in a news report that the Filipino diplomat was caught shoplifting at the Yongsan Military Base PX (Post Exchange) shopping center.

The diplomat allegedly took a music player and a bottle of Gucci perfume last November but the incident was revealed only recently.

The suspect was only identified as someone from the Philippines. Because of the incident, United States Forces Korea (USFK) Commander Gen. Burwin Bell reportedly banned Filipino diplomats from using other Yongsan facilities.

The Herald said Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo secretly met with Base Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Sargeant at the sidelines of his official visit to Seoul last week to discuss the incident.

The report added that the US military was considering legal action against the Filipino diplomat.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Administration Franklin Ebdalin, however, said the Department of Foreign Affairs is not aware of the shoplifting incident involving a Filipino diplomat.

Ebdalin said the Home Office has not received a complaint from base authorities in South Korea.

A Filipino diplomat, who asked not to be named, said the report was “fabricated” and was part of a campaign to put the Philippine Embassy and officials of the diplomatic mission in a bad light.

“We’ve already asked for a copy of the tape but until now we haven’t received it,” the source said.

That's what we call mindset. Let's admit that we, Filipinos are being discriminated anywhere we go. If the accusation would be proven wrong, the US government through their embassy in South Korea should ask for a public apology through the newspaper that published the story. That's also what we call irresponsible journalism.

We have to stand for our rights no matter how lowly our jobs and positions are and be proud of being Filipinos.

Consul Susan O. Castrence used to be our Consul dito sa Osaka Consulate. Siya yung pinalitan ni Consul Antonio Villamayor na ngayon ay sa Saudi Arabia naman naka post. Consul Castrence ay isang diplomat na madaling kausapin at very accommodating maging siya ay sa office o wala. nai-clear na ni Ambassador Castrence ang story behind that controversy.
not guilty. may dala syang sariling chips para ipakita na sample doon sa shop,
kasi humahanap siya ng chips para sa karaoke song na mga pang-bata... as
pasalubong. then pinakitaan siya ng iba naman chips, pero isinauli nya di siya
bumili. at tumingin and nag-test ng gucci perfume, pero di nya rin binili coz
expensive nga daw...
ang nakita siguro sa camera e yun sarili nyang chips na ibinalik nya sa bag nya.
at walang nakita sa bag nya na kahit anong bottled perfume.

Narinig ko ang balita sa isang kaibigan na may TFC. Unfortunately, wala akong TFC so what I did, nag-surf muna ako sa Internet at nagkaroon ako ng background sa balita base on facts. Pero noong una ko palang narinig ang balita ay hindi na ako naniwala.

Ambassador Susan O. Castrence is a very dear friend of mine and my family. Actually she was in Osaka September 2006 to celebrtate her birthday here dahil bago pa lang syang na-assign sa Korea at nais niyang makapiling ang kanyang mga close friends dito sa Osaka. Siya ang naging Consul General for 3 years(1996-1999) dito sa Philcongen, Osaka Kobe.

Alam kong lagi syang namimili sa nasabing lugar kung saan napagkamalan syang nag-shoplift. Siguro every weekend ay nandoon siya dahil mas kumpleto at familiar siya sa mga tindang products doon.

Regardless of her position, si Ambassador Castrence ay napakabait at simpleng tao. Noong siya ang Consul General sa Osaka, bibigyan ka niya ng advice as if Nanay mo siya o isang tao na iniisip talaga ang mabuti para sa iyo. Frank and direct to the point ang sasabihin niya sa iyong comment pero kung baga ay para sa iyong kabutihan hindi lamang para ma-please ka niya.

Whatever it is, sana ay ma-clear ang pangalan niya at managot kung sino man ang naglabas nang walang katotohanang paratang. Ambassador Castrence will always be the person I know, walang nabawas. I will always respect her and the trust will always be there.
