In recent years, a growing number of people in their 30s have been developing mental and physical problems due to work-related stress. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, a record 205 people with emotional problems were judged eligible last fiscal year for workers' insurance claims. Surprisingly, four out of 10 of these people were said to be in their 30s, outnumbering any other age group by far.
One's drive is matched by stamina in one's 30s, enabling one to build confidence in jobs. But being in one's prime can also mean being greatly overworked. One survey found that more than 20 percent of working men were putting in hours of overtime that crossed the threshold that put them at risk of karoshi (death from overwork). They are under relentless pressure to perform and show results.
