hullo twinklyblue!:)
Obon is a customary tradition in Japan. The Japanese people thinks that Obon is when the dead comes back from their world to visit this world. They therefore see this season as the perfect time to greet their beloved departed.

Now, most Japanese companies respect this tradition and allow their employees to have holidays during these days so that they could visit the grave or the remains of their dead. Mostly, I think they give their employees three days off, but employees take advantage of this and add a day or two of paid holiday (that is 有給休暇 in japanese) so that they could lengthen their holiday and maybe go out on a vacation abroad.

You see, three days of Obon holiday plus two days of paid holiday, wisely arranged, could enable an employee to have 9 straight days of vacation. Mostly, Japanese do this by working on Obon and taking the holiday on alternative days when they see fit. It is wiser to do it that way, since if you got your holiday in Obon, the highway are all packed with commuters and it's difficult to go by on a local trip.

Alas, some companies, especially foreign-owned companies do not give their employees Obon yasumi. But I am lucky my company does, even if only for three short days.:)

Most employees prefer to call the vacations they take during this time of the year as "Summer Vacation or Natsu Yasumi" instead of Obon yasumi.

Im crossing my fingers so i can take mine probably on the 3rd or 4th week of this month. :D
