Have you, guys, come across of this chaos over the articles authored by Malu Fernandez at People Asia Magazine (PAM) and The Manila Standard sometime around June 2007? A friend of mine forwarded a pdf version of the article but I opted not to use it since it already contains comments of a lot of people. I could't find the original link from PAM but there's one I found at another site which I put in here (the original one & her reply to the protest of the netizens).

The original article was entitled "From Boracay to Greece" where the author, in its minute detail, narrated her travel to the two places. What created the chaos was the mention of OFW's in the article and how she described her planetrip with them (coz she travelled coach class) and her annoyance of them. This got into the nerves of a lot of people, editors and OFWs alike. So if you research the net, you will find a lot of hate-articles against her, PAM and The Manila Standard, demanding for public apology or otherwise fire her.

But to the dismay of a lot of people, she published her scathing reply with a concluding question that goes: "Now I seriously ask you, am I being a diva or are people around me just lacking in common sense? Perhaps it’s a little of both!"

I read the article and I must admit that I got a little pissed off as well of how she arrogantly belittled the OFWs and bragged her designer perfume and wear. To quote a part of it: "On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while my Jo Malone evaporated into thin air."

She may call it hilarious and witty, but the fact remains that she's insensitive and her writing is a classic derision of the lower socioeconomic class.

Anyway, just read on and share your comments/opinion on the article.

To anyone here in TF, if you're one of her friends, don't keep your comments, be it positive or negative.

nakakairita nga ung article nya...ang yabang-yabang ng dating nya thinking na kapwa nman nyang pinoy ung nilalait nya dun...

going through the article, i was thinking na maybe one of her reasons in writing it that way is to provoke people... db pag nagsusulat tayo, iniisip natin yong theme ng isusulat natin? paiiyakin ba natin ang reader, pa in-love-in, etc..baka ung sa knya ay i-provoke tayo kasi parang consistent ung panglalait nya and pagyayabang na parang hindi lang yon plain details or spice ng isinulat nya. thinking also, trabaho na nya ang magsulat so alam nya ang etiquette sa pagsusulat pero bakit she opted to write that kind of article? imagine, hindi naman yata sya ganun ka-sikat sa pagsusulat nya(i dont know her kc.heheehe), then after this article/s ay naging "hot" item sya sa maraming tao..kumbaga sa showbiz, bad publicity is still publicity...sa tingin nyo?

siguro nga mas mabango ang perfume nya... or mas me better education sya... or branded ang mga gamit nya... pero meron ba naman naghihintay sa kanya tuwing uuwi sya sa bahay nya? meron bang sabik pag nakakatanggap ng sulat nya? meron bang umiiyak pag paalis na sya sa pinas? di ko alam... pero sure ako marami sa mga OFW ang merong ganun! wag na tayong magalit sa taong yan... maybe its just her way of coping sa mga inadequacy nya sa buhay... lets just think of why most of us choose to be OFW's... because of our loved one's

Much to my chagrin, I had never been to the beach. You see, I hate the sand, the bugs and the mosquitoes, but I figured it would be fun with everyone around. As we reached the villa I was spraying Baygon everywhere. I thought I had nearly killed myself with all the insect repellant and Lysol disinfectant I kept on spraying. . by:malu f.

as she write the articles sobrang syang mayabang!! Too think its her fellow filipino is the one she criticized!!! And by being a journalist, she should be responsible enough whatever she writes coz its reflects to her own personality as well with our country. Sobra syang mayabang, she didnt even think that the OFW is a big help to our country, their are the one who really put our economy on top( by sending remittances in ph). Too sad my gnyang klaseng tao na sobrang mapanglait sa mga kpwa nila:mad: , im more proud of this people coz they bring more honor and respect with our country and to their respective family. Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other. Although I could mention that it is easier to understand someone who has a lower socioeconomic background that would entail a whole other page and frankly I don’t want to be someone to bridge the gap between socioeconomic classes. I leave that to the politicians in my family who believe they can actually help. Now I seriously ask you, am I being a diva or are people around me just lacking in common sense? Perhaps it’s a little of both!
Ahhhh yes. Her delusions of grandeur and elegance is so obvious by declaring in great detail, in that article she had written, the things she possess and the places of prestige she visited, in her pathetic attempt to project an image of a wealthy socialite rather than a journalist, which she sucka$$ at doing judging by the typos and errors she made in that magazine article of hers.

Of course, everyone in economy class was yelled at for having overweight hand-carries. Mine was 17kg (ssshhhh!). That was all my makeup and accessories I would never risk losing if my luggage ended in the middle of the Sahara desert. While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs)
Her hand-carry should be the least of her worries. It's her ginormous
fat a$$ she better be concerned about. And no, the seats aren't too small, she's just too fat to fit in it.

Have you seen her by the way?
Here's what she looks like.
Are you ready for this? Brace yourselves...
TADA!
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w193/Hensoldt/malamalu1.jpg
OK, you can laugh now.

OMFG! I bet it's her wildest fantasy to have those young guys sweat all over her naked body all at the same time, and spend the whole night in debauchery and carnal delight. But of course, none of those guys would even think of touching her fugly a$$. Unless she pays them a
sh!tload of money...for therapy.

Maybe I'm being mean to her, but this pretentious, wannabe-socialite, cunt surely deserves it.

She screwed up one very important thing though. She failed to realize that true socialite elites have class. And class is not measured through mere material possessions only, the character of the person has as much to do with it if not more.

In recent news, Ms. Malu Fernandez finally resigns.

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/topofthehour.aspx?St oryId=89652

At least she realized her mistakes, though she should have known where to draw the line between being funny and witty and being downright insensitive and apathetic.

Baka naman ginawa nya lang yun for the sole purpose of projecting herself from being an unknown to being a controversial lechon. Oops, I mean "writer". Well, she got the attention she wanted, pero of the negative kind hehe.

Sayang, she can write, I'll give her that. But Jessica Zafra became famous without looking down and being nasty to her fellow Filipinos.

@Mod-Dax and adechan: i agree. hate is a negative feeling. but it's a natural reaction that a human can feel for people like her, people without regard to others. take note how she generalized OFWs and as if being one is a liability to our country.

@hensoldt, you're right. her grandiose reference to her branded stuff was a pathetic attempt to project an elite image which was albeit eclipsed by her taking coach class, and yes, by her unethical writing.

@nasalaag, thanks for the update. she seems to have finally come to her senses after her attempt to justify her actions. she may have referred only to the OFWs in the middle east, but it's the entire OFW populace's antagonism that backfired against her.

assuming, for the sake of argument, that it wasn't her intention to malign, but, duh! she's a journalist who is supposed to evaluate first what she is supposed to write! in fairness to her, it's not totally her fault but her editor as well, who should have tidied up her writing.

Right on sistah! :D

Natawa na lang ako when I saw her picture. She doesn't look like a high-class socialite. A real and true-blooded rich persona doesn't flaunt kung ano man ang yaman niya. Mas low-profile nga ang totoong mayaman, don't you think? Ang daming inconsistencies hindi lang sa mga sinasabi niya kundi lalo na her actions. Imagine, you're rich then nasa economy class ka lang. Patawa 'yang si Malu Fernandez...

Hating her would only consume me... She's more on the comedy side para sa akin kasi she made me laugh. :D

she deserve to beg for forgivenes. she maybe came from a higher society but she doesnt have the right to put down the OFW's. di yata nya alam na tumataas ang economy ng Pilipinas dahil sa mga OFW's.

Statement from Malu Fernandez on the OFW Controversy

I am humbled by the vehement and heated response provoked by my article entitled 'From Boracay to Greece !' which came out in the June 2007 issue of People Asia. To say that this article was not meant to malign, hurt or express prejudice against the OFWs now sounds hollow after reading through all the blogs from Filipinos all over the world. I am deeply apologetic for my insensitivity and the offensive manner in which this article was written, I hear you all and I am properly rebuked. It was truly not my intention to malign hurt or express prejudice against OFWs.

As the recent recipient and target of death threats, hate blogs, and deeply personal insults, I now truly understand the insidiousness of discrimination and prejudice disguised as humor. Our society is bound together by human chains of kindness and decency. I have failed to observe this and I am now reaping the consequences of my actions. It is my fervent hope that the lessons that Ive learned are not lost on all those who through anonymous blogs, engaged in bigotry, discrimination, and hatred ( against overweight individuals , for example )

I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this. To date I have submitted my resignation letters to both the Manila Standard and People Asia, on that note may this matter be laid to rest.
