Foreign Care Dictionary Website Launched

Japan Foundation has just launched an online dictionary called Nihongo de Care-Navi (http://nihongodecarenavi.jp/en/index.html)directed to help present and prospective foreign caregivers who are expected to come to Japan to help the government solve the intensifying problem of rapidly aging population.

The site boasts of 6,000 vocabulary entries and 2,000 examples that are expected to be learned by any foreign health workers if they are to live and work effectively in Japan.
Other features of the site includes the following:

1. Care-Kun, the site mascot and navigator, offers suggestion on related words and
expressions.
2. Useful lists of expressions and kanji that are likely to come up in nursing and
caregiving to facilitate learning, including “Verbal Contact 50,” “Basic
Expressions 500,” and “Kanji List 200.”
3. Usage examples were chosen for their relevance to the workplace and daily
situations, and consist of phrases covered in beginning-level Japanese.
4. A variety of search formats is available. In addition to ordinary searches using
spelling and a phonetic chart, searchers can also be conducted using “Tag
Navi,” a process involving tags that is becoming more common on the Internet.
5. The use of the “Tag Navi” enables users to easily edit their own vocabulary lists.

I think this website is particularly useful for beginners of Japanese language and yes, for those intending to work as health worker in Japan, but some of the other health-related vocabularies are useful even for intermediate and advance Japanese learners. See for yourself if it is useful for you and your families.

I know this has been posted previously but as somebody involved in the project, I wanted to make a personal pitch to again remind everyone at TF about this website :)

actually, ginawa ang NIHONGO de CARE-NAVI website bilang tulong para sa mga nurse/caregiver o sa mga may trabaho na may kinalaman sa nursing/caregiving o kahit sa mga nais mag-aral para pumasok sa ganitong klaseng trabaho.

it was also made as an online resource for the nihongo teachers training these people. basically, it contains often-used Japanese expressions and words in the fields of nursing or caregiving.

pero sa tingin ko, magagamit din naman ang nilalaman nito ng kahit hindi nurse/caregiver. halimbawa, yung mga nag-aalaga ng may sakit na kapamilya o kamag-anak, o yung may mga pamilya dito sa Japan.

sana magamit nyo itong project na pinagpaguran din ng mga taga Japan Foundation Kansai Center. talagang sinimulan ang project na ito para sa mga Filipino, bagamat di pa nila nalagyan ng translation sa Filipino/Tagalog.

kung may makabigay ng feedback o comments tungkol sa website, request ko lang na ipaalam nyo sa akin dito o kahit i-PM nyo na lang ako. matutuwa po talaga ang mga creators ng website sa mga feedback o comments.

hindi po ako caregiver...binisita ko po ang site at try ko po...nakakatulong po ung site kahit sa ordinaryong tulad ko...sinulat ko nga po ung ibang words or phrase na i think magagamit ko..hehehe...para kabisaduhin baga... hindi po intimidating yong site sa tulad kong anga-anga...para nga pong pambata dahil sa kulay saka malalaki ung letters...at madali lang gamitin kasi may tag...marami pong words dun na gamit din ng tulad ko...i think, hindi po mahihirapan yong mga gagamit ng site dahil ung ibang word may sinulat kung saan at kelan gamitin...

new word ko:

onari- gas (akachan no onari wo detta)
nurui- lukewarm (akachan no miruku ga nurui desu)
makura- pillow (d ko alam tong unan)

sana may ganito sa tf. lagay ko nga link ng site sa pc ko...hehehe..thank you po sa link

As a caregiver here in japan since 1993, ok siya nakakatulong talaga , kaya lang pag hindi mo diniibdib ang pag-aaral malimutan mo rin lalo na pag hindi mo siya ginagamit daily.

medyo iba yung gamit kapag "nadedepress ako" ang gusto mong sabihin.
you can say (今)落ち込んでいる、(ima ) ochikonde iru.
or kung gusto mong kakaibang expression (na minsan ginagamit ko :D) pwede rin ブルーになっている、buru u ni natte iru... kung baga, feeling blue.

thanks for that observation.
actually, the Romanization was a bit of an issue from the very beginning, even before the website was launched.

I personally agree with you about rendering "え段+い" as "~ei" especially with the familiarity that people have with words like "kirei" or "sensei." (then there's also the spelling of the お段+う as "~oo" instead of "~ou" so "danbou" becomes "danboo"... it would be interesting to see how learners would be able to read words like aoo、会おう or koshoo chuu、故障中 :p)

I've been pushing for the ei/ou rendering, but in the course of the project, I think the project people ultimately agreed to subscribing to the style which gained popularity because it is used by prominent Japanese scholars Osamu and Nobuko Mizutani (check their books such as "An Introduction to Modern Japanese"). hence you have all those entries like "Firipinokee."

someone had also raised the idea to just have all the long vowels rendered with a bar on top of the vowel, and I thought that would've been a better option but this was shot down because of problems regarding encoding (ie. occurence of mojibake)

I'll bring up your comment with the project team, anyway.
we have a symposium coming up in March so I'll have time to discuss the matter with them.

the website will soon be in for a rehaul to make the site better suited to users' needs so comments like yours are now all the more welcome and appreciated.

The problem with their approach is that most foreigners or those with little or no background in Japanese would resort to reading the entries phonetically.

While most Romanization of the language is based on their roman phonemes, a pronunciation guide might also be a step in the right direction.

For example:
TFが大好きです。
TF ga daisuki desu.
TF gah die ski des (or something along this line which sounds closer to the real thing)


If I was Japanese and somebody says FI-RI-PI-NO-KI (firipinokee) to me, I'd probably shrug and say what the hell you saying:D

actually I think an Indonesian version might be needed earlier than a Tagalog one :rolleyes: based on the info in this report (http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200802120307.html ).

but don't worry, the Kansai Center people won't be abandoning this database project. mas labs naman nila ang Filipinos kesa sa mga Indonesians ;)

nang ibigay sa akin ito nang aming 理事長　saka ko lang nalaman na pati ang mga Indonesians din pala ay papunta din dito sa japan. Ginawa pala akong representative nang Okayama Pref. as a 介護実習指導員　sa mga darating na mga caregivers. Hindi ko pa alam kung kelan magsimula, sana may ma meet din akong ka TF pagpunta ko diyan sa Tokyo.
