kanashii (adjective)

3. happy - (specfic word)
ureshii (adjective) or shiawase (adjective)
difference of the two: according to the Japanese language specialist Mizutani, "ureshii" is the feeling of happiness for a specific incident (one shot, ika nga) whereas "shiawase" refers to a state of happiness

translate: bakit happy ka?

in expressing emotions, Japanese generally use the exact word when expressing their own feelings. "Ureshii desu" and "Kanashii desu" are used to describe one's emotions, rather than referring to a third person. but it can be used when asking people how they feel especially in familiar situations.
you could use "Doushite/nande kanashii no?" (why are you sad?) and "Doushite/nande ureshii no?" (why are you happy?) to people you are close to.
