Hello peeps:cool:!

I've been contemplating on buying a game console here in Japan (para malibang). However I'm torn in between choosing among the three (PSP/DS/Wii).

I'd like to hear feedback from you guys on what types of games are best played on each console, its multi-capability, and some issues that one may be aware of.

I am aware that each console has its advantages/ selling points that is why I want to have a comprehensive background on each, so that I can determine which console would fit my needs. Definitely, I'm going to buy only one among the three.

Hopefully through this thread, other hopeful buyers would also be guided on their choices.

Hi scion_cho,

I'd like to give my thoughts on your queries.
Actually, among the three consoles, one of them is odd one out. The Wii.
It is because the other two are mobile(portable) consoles, the Wii is not.
For the two mobile game consoles, you could check this out:

http://gear.ign.com/articles/599/599454p1.html

For Wii, it belongs to the third generation console category together with PS3 and XBOX360.
Actually, if you would ask me your question, each of them has their strong and weak points. But the important thing is, what are your needs? Are you a hardcore gamer? Do you prefer graphics over gameplay? Do you want to use it while on the train or just about anywhere? Do you want to use it for other stuff (multimedia playing, etc.) What type of games you enjoy the most?
If you could answer these questions, then it is easier for you to decide which console to buy.
Here is another link which I think my help you:

http://www.consumersearch.c om/www/electronics/video-game-consoles/

Whatever you decide on, please tell me later. I am likewise considering buying PS3 myself. My PS2 is still alive but PS3's price has gone down and it is a good timing to buy one.

Hello Kratos,

Thanks for the reply.

I don't classify myself as a hardcore gamer, but I do play various games (of different genre) once in a while. I think the PS3 and XBox consoles are for the hardcore gamers; that is why it's not on my main list of consideration for now. I am the type of person who can easily go hardcore though, but I'd rather not to (hehe, umiiwas maging game addict actually).

The main reason why I included Wii, is because of its interactivity. I am a tennis enthusiast and Wii Sports seem to be an interesting package. Of course I won't buy Wii just because of a tennis game that is why I would want to know more of other interesting games available for Wii.

You're right, it's actually a head on between DS and PSP. I have just included Wii in my list because of the reason stated above. I have actually read various articles about the 2 portable consoles and it always come to this: gameplay vs. graphics.

I would like to read some testimonials from DS and PSP (and Wii) users on why they enjoy their consoles, what specific types of games they play and on how they use their consoles.

To sum up the positive things I've heard from the consoles:
1.) Wii - interactive gaming with the use of the remote and nunchuk.
2.) PSP- I've seen on a TV ad, pwede nang TV output.
- MP3 player, Video player (any format ba ito?) [although I already own a 30Gb iPod Video 5th gen]
- Graphics. Basically a PS2 portable (tama ba?)
- Popular game I can think of is the new FinalFantasy: Crisis Core
3.) DS - My friends say it can act as a PDA (is it software that you can download?) [though I have a PDA phone already]
- New type of Gameplay. Dual screen (1 touch screen)
- backward compatibility with Gameboy games
- No Regional Lock [this is a good one!]

Another factor is the price "sulit-ness". Sobrang mura ba dito sa Japan, compared sa Philippines? I think there is a big price difference b/n Japanese Wii and the English Wii (mura ang jap Wii). You've said earlier that PS3 price had gone down, how 'bout the others?

Anything more to add about these consoles? Please feel free to do so. Waiting for the other guys to pitch in some of their ideas .

I'm not in a hurry to buy just yet. I'm currently in a 3-month business trip while my Engineer visa is being processed, so I guess when I have finally settled in, that's the time I'm going to buy. So kaunting research muna. :D

it doesnt hurt if you own a ds,psp, and a wii here.. they are dirt-cheap if you look at how much you are earning here.. :D just my 2 cents.. :D

im a ds owner.. pero ipapamana ko na sya.. so she's gonna be leaving me this year end.. im keeping quiet about it though.. i can already sense some psp owners here.. :karate: peace guys.. hehehe

last game ko na is Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.. i like the way its played..(stylus to move and attack) draw a circle around link, he'll do a 360 deg slash.. blah blah.. solve puzzles, blow candles(yes blow into the mic) trace the path of your boomerang using the stylus.. enough said.. im immersed into the game right now.. and of course there are other great games... :D

noong naghahanap kami nang gamesoft niya, parang kaunti lang compared to other games

Puwedeng pang family. Puwede din access and DS through wii, puwede ding mag download nang games from internet.

^ oh, who are those psp owners? come out come out where ever you are. hehehe. im an average gamer. i own sony products except ps3. i haven't tried using ds lite :D

here's my satisfying experience/review about psp (+[__]%):

screen (size) really matters. bigger display with higher resolution adds up to an addictive hours of playing games or watching movies. 4.3-inch TFT-LCD wide-screen display (480x272 pixels, 16.77 million colors).
built-in analog controller works perfectly fine for me in playing race games ;) just like need for speed and initial d
impressive wireless gaming. my friend and i played tekken 5 dark resurrection in multiplayer PSP-to-PSP wireless mode. i was impressed by the smooth gameplay.
built-in wi-fi capabilities is great. you can save multiple wireless configurations that removes the hassle of setting up network connections every time you want to use this service.
browse website using the psp's onboard browser. this app supports tabbed browsing, javascript, and css.
other features includes music/media player, photo manager, equipped with USB 2.0 and infrared for linking your psp to your pc, and moreone of the best thing i did to my psp was customizing it according to my preferences. yes, it's homebrewing. disclaimers, don't throw that mad-face on me, i won't be discussing it here hehehe. "free stuff" paints a sweet smile on my face :D

to sum it up, psp is not only dedicated for gaming, its a portable total entertainment system :D

Thanks scion_cho for opening up this thread.
I guess it also helped me to have more ideas about about the gaming consoles.
And probably, Kikoy is right. Owning all of these is not bad. Especially if you have friends and family members to play with.
Thanks!!!

i'm also a casual gamer myself. and to be honest, xbox360 nalang ang kulang ko sa collection.

PSP yung unang nabili ko from my friend (so 2nd hand). great graphics.
no region lock sa games. for videos, needs special conversion. for music, it plays mp3s.
the downside for me siguro is yung weight nya. kasi pda fone din yung dinadala ko,
tapos, hindi ako nakapag-try ng network game kasi none of my friends had PSP pa.

Wii was the next one na nabili ko. this tym, brand new. and yes, region-locked siya.
so japanese games lang. (or are there english games na ba for jap Wii? kung sino may
alam, share naman ng info diyan o.) great console siya for party games. so dapat at
shippuden, and mario party 8. ang ingay2x nga namin e. :D
since 1 wiimote (+nunchuck) lang yung wii package, bilhin mo yung Hajimete no Wii game
currently, i'm waiting for the Super Smash Bros. Brawl release.
hopefully may online-support na! coz these games that i have don't have online-support pa.

DS-Lite became a fad with my close friends (dito sa japan at sa pinas).
nagpapabili yung mga nasa pinas kasi even after currency conversion, mas-mura pa
rin yung japanese DS. pwede namang i-change yung interface to english. and not
region-locked for games. so this tym, multiplayer gaming talaga yung reason why
bumili na rin ako.
kung within meters away, pwede adhoc-mode (local). or kung thousand miles away,
connect by internet via a wifi access point (WEP-encryption lang pwede, WPA hindi)
to Nintendo's (free) online service. highly recommended ang mario kart.
or Elite Beat Agents (music game, parang dance revolution using the pen), ito yung
usual na pangpalipas oras with my wife when commuting for more than an hour sa train.

PS3 was the last one. no region-lock for games. but for movies, meron.
DVD-region and BluRay-region locks are active daw. iba-iba ang regioning ng DVD at
BluRay. familiar na naman siguro yung DVD regioning. for the BluRay, go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_code s
(US, Japan, Philippines, etc belong to 1 region. hehehe).
as of this tym, wala pa akong nabiling PS3 games.
overwriting the game OS). kaya lang don't expect entertainment capabilities
under linux coz sony did not expose its video memory to linux.
i downloaded from Playstation Network mga free videos and demo games.
top-notch talaga ang graphics (if you have the right tv).

recommendation: bilhin mo isa-isa. 2nd hand para mura. :D
on a serious note, research ka nalang muna kung what games are available and
what will be released soon per console.
with regard to the prices, mahal talaga sa pinas. grabe sila mag-patong. kasi wala
sigurong competition. parang times 2 pa.
25K yen lang yung Wii dito. 250$ sa US. eh sa pinas, 25K pesos!
not so sure kung magkano sa singapore or hongkong, baka OK doon pabili ng Wii
kasi parang english yung games.
also, check out www.play-asia.com, though i haven't tried buying from them pa.

@scion_cho: napulot ko lang sa net yung image. home-made yung FPGA board na ginamit running on top is uclinux.

tutal may nag-open na ng mga downloadable games para sa DS. discuss na rin ako about PSP customization, baka maging eye-opener (jowk). kapag napalitan mo na yung original firmware mo into a custom firmware, marami ka nang magagawa, you can play downloaded games sa memory card mo. plug as many games as your memory can handle :D. you can change sony's default XMB to any free/downloadale XMB Themes :D. currently, i've customized my psp into OSX Theme. i love the smooth graphics and cool icons hehehehe.

you can install different apps downloadable online. one of my favorite is the irshell (Multitasking shell). you can do different activities while playing games like mute the current game-sound and play your favorite MP3. you can also use this to remotely control your TV via the IR (though limited brands/model is supported). FileExplorer (where you can see the content of your PSP FlashMemory). and more.

again, PSP offers Total Mobile Entertainment experience :D

I think my friend bought the US PSP games sa LAOX (2nd floor) sa Akihabara
yung malapit sa eki. Medyo mahal nga lang kasi imported e.

I haven't found an English (imported) Wii na sold here in Japan.
Pero US (imported) PS3, I saw it in another LAOX sa main road (near Onoden
and Love Merci). The price was 100K yen.
Check mo nalang doon, baka may English Wii.

So far, i like Wii and nintendo games, basta mga family oriented at educational ang gamesoft.

kaya i voted for my second thought "wag na sayang lang pera mo":)
