hi there, mga ka-TF!

i'm just wondering kung nagdi-direct hiring ba ang mga local boards of education sa mainland Japan for ALT positions? kung hindi naman, magkano ang compensation that dispatch companies usually offer for ALT positions? at saka, nagbibigay ba ang dispatch companies ng mga benefits like health insurance (50% paid by the dispatch company, the other 50% by the employer), pension plan, and unemployment insurance? usually, magkano ang net pay ng ALTs under dispatch companies?

i hope to hear answers soon...

As far as I know, I could be wrong though, VERY few get hired directly by BOEs these days. They prefer doing business with a dispatcher.

As to the remuneration, hindi pare-pareho. It depends on the dispatch company (and the BOE you're working for). The one I know offers 250,000 yen per month which includes a monthly attendance bonus. National income taxes which are approximately 7% are automatically deducted from your salary.

Benefits? Unfortunately, wala masyado. Sure, they do offer you health insurance, transportation, etc., but you HAVE to pay all of them yourself. That is, if you choose to enroll in them. The only benefit that I'm aware of is the payed holidays -- summer and winter. But then again, this may not be true to all dispatch companies. Iba-iba kasi ang policies nila.

All the best :)

There are a few schools/universities here that hire english teachers directly. Like in my case, I got hired directly by the university that I’m working with right now and I must say the benefits are pretty much similar (except for the pension plan which is compulsory, I guess, plus paid holidays other than the summer and winter holidays and free study tours here and abroad) with that of ALT’s but then the salary is, shall I say more reasonable, probably because you have to teach all by yourself not like what ALT does. But then again, kalypso is right, whether one is hired directly or not, from a dispatch company, BOE or private institution, they all have different policies. So, wait for other TF members who are willing to answer some if not all of your queries.

Till two months ago, I was working as a full-time Native Speaker hired by a BOE. It wasn't that difficult to get hired by a BOE (2 interviews lang); what may be hard is to get the information that a certain school needs a full-time English teacher. It's not usually advertised in newspapers or at gaijinpot.com (except the Okayama BOE positions).

Being hired by a BOE, you'll be given a certificate to teach English by yourself (as compared to an ALT who needs the presence of a Japanese teacher in the room to teach). You're are expected to perform jobs and responsibilities as any other Japanese teachers (kaya medyo matrabaho at kailangan ng Nihonggo).

Benefits: depende sa educational background at working experience (back in our country and here) (Y200T up), transpo allowance if more than 2kms away from the school ang bahay mo, abt 50% housing subsidy, living allowance for your dependents, medical insurance, unemployment benefits (pero you pay Y2T plus each month), though you'll need to pay kosei nenkin and municipal tax.

The bonuses (June, December, March).. about 20% ng annual pay.. makes being a BOE-hired teacher sweet!

8 to 5 ang working hours but since you're treated just like any other teachers, there are times when you'll need to stay in school longer.

ALT ako for 3 years before the BOE position. 8 to 3:30 working hours. Completion bonus lang (in my case 10% of what I got when I was working for a BOE) at the end of the school year. Shorter working hours, if you're single, being an ALT gives you more time to do part-time English teaching jobs.

BOE-hired ones aren't expected to work part-time.

You can always submit your resume at your town's Kyoikuinkai (BOE), cross your fingers that they'll check it out when there's a position.

How I got it before? Japanese friends. Network.

Good luck!

hi there, megumi! thanks for the information...

anyway, i myself is a direct-hired BOE teacher. but, unlike what you have posted here, i do not have the 20% bonuses. however, my BOE pays 50% of the insurances given as benefits to direct-hired foreign employees. they also have a share in our pension premium. i start working at 8:15am and finishes the day at 3:15pm. as regards the differences of benefits dahil sa educational background, such is not the case here. pare-pareho kaming lahat na mga direct-hired foreign teachers ng sueldo at benepisyo.

do/did you work for Kurashiki BOE? i think diyan sa BOE na iyan, they do allow foreign teachers to teach by themselves, and a certification to teach English is also provided. tama ba ako? kung hindi naman, it seems that your BOE is really a good one! puwedeng malaman? hehehe:D

again, thanks for the nice information...enjoy the day!
