View Full Version : Countdown to Leopard!

It's official, Leopard will begin to roar by 26th of this month.:bite:
Following is an excerpt taken from a MacWorld UK article (http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/news/index.cfm?newsid=193 94&pagtype=allchandate) .
----------------------------------------------
The release also features the final version of Boot Camp for Leopard, which has only been available in beta format (for Mac OS X 10.4) until now. The company offered no update on its plans to maintain Boot Camp support for OS 10.4 today.
Content on any computer on a local network can now be searched using Spotlight, browsed using Cover Flow or copied across the network using drag-&-drop. .Mac members can use the new Back to My Mac feature to browse and access files on their remote Macs over the internet.
Collaboration gains a significant boost with the addition of screen sharing within iChat. This feature lets users remotely view and operate another Mac. iChat also lets users show photos, presentations, videos or files in a video conference.
Cocking a snook at Microsoft's complex Vista licensing charges, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: "“Leopard, the sixth major release of Mac OS X, is the best upgrade we’ve ever released. And everyone gets the ‘Ultimate’ version, packed with all the new innovative features, for just £85.”

I heard from a friend and read in some mac forums that Apple won't bother to check if your a student or not, so this might mean that you could use their special price cut for education. (http://store.apple.com/Catalog/Japan/Images/routingpage.html) Personally, i don't know since i haven't tried it, but there's nothing wrong in trying. Goodluck to all of us. This is going to be a very exciting month.

If you order from the Online Apple Store, they will require you to fill up a form with a copy of your school ID (student or staff) and fax it to them on your first purchase. At the Apple Store, you only need to show them your ID.

hullo Paul!
nakakapaglaway kasi yung OS performance nya at cool appz :D

now that the cat is out of the cage, maybe those of us who have it could share tips and some great features that we discover as we play around with the new OS. I guess there's a lot to learn here. I'll start with one great feature of Leopard that will be exceptionally useful for many of us, Japanese language learners:
The free and pre-installed Dictionary.
According to Apple (haven't tried it yet), in addition to the New Oxford American Dictionary the built-in Dictionary now has a Japanese-English translation function. Not only that, the little program is also packed with a fully fledged Japanese Dictionary and Thesaurus provided by Shogakukan. It says there in the website that the Japanese dictionary "contains over 200,000 words with rich descriptions and examples, and the thesaurus contains 25,000 words covering 6,000 categories." For many of us who are still struggling with the Japanese language, this is indisputably one tasty feature of Leopard.
Here is the link (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#dictionary) , see for yourself. :)

Apple claims Leopard sales break 2M in first weekend
Apple said it has shipped more than 2 million copies of Leopard, the Mac OS X upgrade it released globally last Friday.
"Despite some of the naysayers saying that it was an evolutionary release, not a revolutionary release, this looks like a very successful launch," said Chris Swenson, an analyst at The NPD Group. "In fact, in many respects, Apple is undercounting licenses, since it counts a family pack as only one sale."

on the other hand, this "oooohhhhh shiny!" OS does the Blue Screen of Death :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
Not everyone has given Mac OX 10.5 a passing grade, at least not as an upgrade to earlier editions. Over the weekend, large numbers of users reported problems, including "blue screens of death" that stymied the upgrade's final stages. Some of the blue screening was traced to older versions of APE, an application enhancer used by "haxies," or customizers, to tweak the Macintosh's interface and software.

check this out first before plunging your feet on your new 'pussy cat':
Still others jumped in with instructions to manually uninstall APE (Application Enhancer), a framework created by Unsanity for use with its Mac customizing haxies such as ShapeShifter. "Please note that this does involve manipulation of files from the root prompt," cautioned Chris Mcculloh, who first made the suggestion. "This is not for the faint of heart, or those who are unfamiliar with the UNIX file system/command structure."
Mcculloh listed the steps as:
* Reboot into single-user mode (hold Command-S while booting)
* Remove the following files by typing each line below:
rm -rf /Library/Preference Panes/Application Enhancer.prefpane
rm -rf /Library/Frameworks/Application Enhancer.framework
rm -rf /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Application Enhancer.bundle
rm -rf /Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.ape.pli st
* Exit, to continue booting normally, type:
exit
For those who have not yet installed Leopard, the Unsanity APE app provides an uninstaller that can be used first to remove the framework before the new OS is installed. Alternatively, users can use the "archive and install" option, which places a new copy of Leopard on the user's computer while moving older OS files to another folder. That would have the effect of moving the potentially offending APE software to a location where it can do little to interfere with the installation process.

A few took the install screw-up in stride, or at least kept their sense of humor. "I don't remember seeing the option in setup under Installation Type that said 'Wait indefinitely while you stare at a blue screen and eventually go mad'," said Phill Horrocks1.

@g33k
that's one cool feature i want to see(out of the supposed 300).. i wonder why they didnt make it public? hehe
@kikoy_balayon,
what do you mean by "they didn't make it public?" the one's who encountered it? or apple announcing it on public:D?
here's the fix from apple's site:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum= 306857
it seems that this "oooohhhh shiny!" os is becoming choosy :D ("LEOPARD COMPATIBLE SOFTWARE") :hihi:
Note: After installation, verify each third-party software product is compatible with Leopard before reinstalling it, especially any application "enhancement" software.
Solution 2: Use the command line (advanced) to remove application enhancement software
Try this solution if you are comfortable using Terminal and have certain application enhancement installed. The software may be removed following the below steps:
Start up in single-user mode by holding Command-S after restarting the computer.
Execute these commands, each on a single line:
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
Execute this command on a single line. Important: Type the command carefully, misuse of rm may damage other files.
rm -rf /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ApplicationEnhancer. bundle
Restart normally.
If the issue persists, use solution 1 above instead.this is their "advance" option(using a terminal), so when it fails, do their solution no.1 :hihi:

While I was excited as I've learned a built-in image preview in Leopard can do basic photo editing, this not-so-funny message just pop-up and the preview window gone.

I've also captured a partial detail of the problem.

On the bright side, I like the simplicity of how Leopard installs any new program on the Mac. Drag mo lang talaga siya. Something new to my experience:D.

Question to Kikoy:
Ginagamit mo ba itong Mac version ng Flickr uploader? I have it installed on Leopard but it just won't work.

Hello Hensoldt,
I believe updated ang softwares after Leopard installation dahil may pop-up na software update then I just followed instructions until it was done. I re-checked and it was up-to-date nga daw.
To be sure, ni-check ko ulit ngayon kung may new update. So far there are no updates available.
Do I need to update programs individually? Or tama lang na click ko yung apple icon sa leftmost upper corner ng desktop then click software update?
Preview still quits on me while making some photo edits. Like for example resize then save. pero kapag multiple editing, crop-> resize and so on, sa pangalawang step mag-quit na siya. Di man lang makapag-save.
I think Leopard is convincing me to try Aperture:p
Please advice on Preview...Mac noobie here:O

By clicking the Software Update under the Apple icon on the far left of the menu bar will cover all OS updates and application updates, with the exception of 3rd party programs, I think. :O

hullo sir crispee!:)
Preview has been fully updated in Leopard. And by the look of it in your crash log, the version you have is 4.0, while for us Tiger users it is still 3.0.9. Preview has been revamped to include many editing features, photo editing included, but as the name suggests Preview is used mainly to preview images, do simple editing like converting image files from TIFF to PDF, and read PDF files. By the look of it you might be working on something that has to do with editing images and RAWCamera - i'm not so sure since i only could see part of the crash log - but it suggests heavy loading and stress on Preview.
That's not to say that the crash should be excused, but I suggest that you send this crash log to Apple and for the time being not do any heavy editing of Preview since you might loose unsaved changes while your working on your great images - a great photographer that you are - and wait 'til Apple update Preview soon. Please use iPhoto to do photo editing while you still don't have Aperture, of course Photoshop is also an option. :)
hope that helps.
