hello twinklyblue,

I am currently living outside the Philippines, can I still apply for admission in any of the program?
For most courses, face-to-face study sessions are conducted four to five times per semester. Hence, proximity to the Learning Center is essential. To date, we have Learning Centers in the Philippines and in Hong Kong.

With the advent of online tutorials, it now becomes possible to do course work even if you are in another country. Please check with your Dean whether the courses in your Program can all be taken online. It is possible that some courses require face-to-face tutoring (e.g., laboratory work or field practice).

twinklyblue,

Actually nakaregister ako sa kanila ngayon and andito ako sa japan, pwde ka magenroll kahit nasan ka, meron mga students from US, Canada, Middle East and iba pang locations. Ang purpose ng learning centers is when you need to take the exam, dun ka pwde pumunta. pero since walang learning center dito, they use the Embassy as our LC, kung malayo ka naman sa tokyo at osaka, sila magdedesginate sayo ng proctor during the exam. Regarding sa payment, better kung may family ka sa Plipinas para sila magbabayad for you thru bank puntang UPOU. Then they'll just need to send the receipt to UPOU as proof of payment. If you have a credit card, you can also use it but you will fill-out a form authorizing UPOU to debit your payment. Not all courses are offered in "Full" Distance Education mode (DE) and sometimes you are required to attend a laboratory or something, but depende sa course, nakalagay naman dun kung DE mode sya (e.g. Diploma in Comsci, R&DM, Associate in Art and Master in Info Sys are delivered by DE mode.;)

just want to share my experience with UPOU.

I was enrolled three years ago in their Research and Development program pero hindi ko natapos dahil well, tinamad ako.

You really need to be self-motivated to continue learning in a "virtual classroom" as they call it. You will be provided with books, access to the homepage complete with your own email so you could correspond to your instructor and classmates online. Sounds easy pero hindi po. You need to alot time and money na rin because you will have to submit a report or exam on a monthly basis.

It's not 100 percent distance education because UPOU doesn't allow its students to take the final exams remotely or online. One needs to be in a UP campus (mine was UPLB) to take the exam (this was 3 years ago)..

On the other hand, maganda din naman 'to for people who want to have a college degree - dedicated ka nga lang talaga dapat.

I've checked the UPOU website and noticed the course fees (http://www.upou.org/admission/fees.html). Updated kaya ito? Kasi 2 years ago, nagtaas na ng Masteral tuition fees (from Php500 to Php1500 per unit - Coll. of Eng'g), tapos last year din sa undergrad(Php300 to Php1k+ per unit). This is for the Diliman campus.

I think reasonable na rin yung tuition fee nila because if you check other open universities, sobrang mahal. For example your undergrad is Comsci, you can have your Master's degree in UPOU, after two years, tapos na agad and you don't need to attend a traditional school, malaki na rin ang masasave mo in terms of time and money.

You should decide with your whole heart prior to enrolling in the UPOU programs.
I enrolled by I quit along the way.
Tinamad po ako.

Well fees would be a problem for those who have their own families now.
Sharon Cuneta, btw, is taking up Associate in Arts. :)

UPOU doesn't offer undergraduate programs for Comsci and other BS courses except BAMS and Associate in Arts.If you mean the Post-baccalaureate Diploma for Comsci, you need to have a bachelor's degree first to take that course. How can you have a Master's Degree if you didn't even graduate yet? Just my two centsUpdated naman po ang website ng UPOU kaya tama po lahat ng information dun. Mahirap mag-aral online but if you really need a degree especially sa mga kababayan natin na gusto magturo or who are already teaching here, makakatulong po ang ilang programs ng UPOU like Prof. Teaching Certification Program, sabi ng coordinator namin, maraming nagttake nito especially mga English Teachers from China, pinakamarami daw sila compared sa mga teachers natin dito sa Japan. May nabasa akong ilang messages dito na ilang schools na tumatanggap ng science at math teachers so makakatulong po siguro yung Diploma in Science/Math Teaching ng UPOU. For non-educ graduates naman pwde rin po ang Diploma in Language in Literacy Education and even better you Master's program nito. Marami sa atin ang walang experience sa teaching pero at least pag sinabi mo sa mga companies na you're studying one of these courses siguro naman may advantage ka na lalo di ba?:) hindi ka lang university grad, may postgrad diploma or Master's degree ka pa in educ. Ang enrollment for Prof. Teaching Certification is until April so for those who are interested, check nyo lang site ng upou @ http://www.upou.org/academic/programs/programs.htm

The Diploma for Comsci is for people who want to have a degree in computer science if their background in college is not comsci. Obviously, you can't take a master's degree if you haven't graduated yet and if you are not a comsci major or took any related course. :)
I think the most important thing is you have the opportunity to a have a Bachelor's degree or Associate degree even you are working or far from our country. You might also get the chance to chat with Ate Shawie if you 'll take Associate in Arts;) :D

Yes, you should be highly motivated and set a definite goal to finish the program. I enrolled two years ago but I quit in my first semester. I now realized that had I continued, I should be graduating already in the Masters in Environment and Natural Resources Management. sayang na sayang..

Full online daw po but you have to go home sa Pinas and take the exam.

Somebody might find it helpful.

Hi!

We are pleased to know of your interest at UPOU in behalf of your
friend. As regards your questions/concerns:

1. Courses offered during the regular semesters will be fully online.
This means that academic interaction will all be online including
the submission of course requirements. Exams will be arranged with a
local proctor so your friend need not go back the the Philippines just
to complete them. Summer courses however, (the hands on/skilled
courses) will be done in residence (UP Diliman) and hopefully he will
be able to arrange for that.

2. If he has satisfied the ROTC units required, then those will be credited.

3. He can apply for the transfer of the credits of the courses he
earned in his previous program. Approval of the transfer credits will
be based on the policies of the university on this. These include
among other things passing the validation exam for each course which
will be credited (my assumption is he took these courses from a non-UP
university) and he can only credit 50% of the academic requirements.

4. We also have to assess what exams he will need to take. If he is
not an UPCAT qualifier, then he may also need to take the
Undergraduate Assessment Test in addition to the DE Readiness Exam.
The next schedule is on 1 June and that will be for the Second
Semester admission. Application for admission is now ongoing.

5. It will be at the student's pacing. The student may enroll up to
12 units (or even more) or at the minimum 3 units (1 subject) per
semester. However, the policy on Maximum Residency will have to be
considered (10 years).

Feel free to email us again for whatever clarifications you may still have.

Thank you for your email.

Rya,

Hi! Embassy dito? I think you can ask them for a proctored exam. nakapagpass ka na ba ng mga requirements?

Anyway, sa mga interested po, hanggang June 30 and deadline ng application (submission of documents) for second semester.

I think magaganda ang mga courses ng UPOU lalo na sa mga Educ , Science at Computer Science majors. four years lang ang titiisin, mas maggiging madali na paghanap mo ng work dito sa Japan, di ba?:D
