docomo san,
Kahit n po nobela p yan I will be very happy to read your advice.
What po ang profession nio docomo san?
i work part time at an IT company here in Tokyo. don't know much about IT when i began working this year, i just like macs and tinkering inside computers from time to time. anyway it was just a hobby. what i know is that if you have passion to learn you'll do just fine.
i haven't touched much of windows world for these many years i've been here, but now i check drivers and advice companies on how to correctly write an inf file for their hardware so they get windows logo. i just read and read, practice there, make a mistake here, read more of that, and then ask my Japanese colleagues for advice.
i don't know why they employed me in the first place. but i guess they assume that everyone starts at zero at first, and from there persistence and hard work will be the key. we had the 忘年会 (bounenkai) just last week, and the owner of the company did a little talk to encourage the workers. i guess the gist of his speech is that nobody should assume that they know enough about IT - i couldn't agree more, because as anyone can see technology is changing in such a fast speed you'll get left out if you remain still. so if you really work hard, you'll be at the same footing as your sempais after two or three years time
we are advised to constantly read more, upgrade our skills, read IT white papers, and catch up on emerging technologies. that's what i've been doing when i have free time, and when i'm not busy checking TF. it's ok with me since it's my hobby anyway. so maybe you should ask yourself, is this really your passion? if it is, then with hard work and persistence, you'll be fine.

<P>To tell the truth Im in a job hunting now and I'm having a hard time getting a Company to hire me. Why late?? Actually I was planning to go and study Gaming at a Technical College after I graduate at the Junior College I am studying right now. But because of an unexcepted circumstances I cannot go to that school and study. I don't want to put to waste the study I did here and go back to the Philippines so I decided to start finding a job. It was really a sudden job hunting. I don't know how to sell my myself to the Company so the result would be bad. The good thing is that I am learning lots of things from those Companies. That is why I am seeking advises from the people here. TO LEARN</P>
<P> </P>
<P>You said part time job. Baket po part time?</P>

hullo Iro_otoko! :)
just part time job, still studying i guess, and i'm student of international politics not IT. but i find the international security perspective of information revolution fascinating, so i'm learning that too on the side while working.
ok, you have three months to go. then let's forget about what you don't know, and focus on what you know and what you want to do. write it, and then prepare a nice resume mentioning everything that you know and you've studied, your passions and why they are so. you haven't got time to waste around worrying about this or that.
if you are capable of Japanese language then it will help a lot. write your resume in Japanese (or ask your friends to help you with it, ask a Japanese friend of yours to check and edit your grammar), and make an English copy, and hand over both of copies when you apply for a job. it impresses your senior when you could write in Japanese while clearly capable of English too.
on finding a job, there are many websites for that, and i'm guessing you know most of them already. but i noticed not so many foreigners, Filipinos included, know about a division of Hello Work (http://www.hellowork.go.jp/) called Tokyo Employment Service Center for Foreigners (http://www.tfemploy.go.jp/index.html). It is a government funded employment office catering only for foreigners who have working visas or are capable of getting working visas such as students (tourist visa holder cannot unfortunately use the service). They have the same kind of office in Osaka. The website could be viewed in Japanese, English, and Chinese.
Anyway, it is a very effective way of finding a job, but not many information is included if you use the English version, so maybe that's why it is not so popular for foreigners. Use the Japanese version, and you could find thousands of employers seeking prospective graduating students like you. I've used it last year, and i received three requests for interviews just for registering, though i declined everyone of them since the work places were far from tokyo, moreover i decided to continue studying.
And yes, you have to visit one of their offices either in Shinjuku (http://www.tfemploy.go.jp/en/info/map2.html) or their new office in Roppong (http://www.tfemploy.go.jp/en/info/map1.html)i to register, and be able to use their built-in job searching computers at their office. You could also schedule a job counseling (just to get advice) in English to point you to the right direction. You could look for available jobs (http://www.tfemploy.go.jp/jp/search/want/wantstlist.html) posted at the website using your computer at home, but to know the job specifics (such as salary and work locations) and to apply for the job you have to visit the office.
Also, join Job Fairs if you could find one. I've found one for you, Akihabara International Job Fair 2008 (http://www.jobfair.jp/jp/JB5001LG.php?j=12), but it's going to be held on March 8 next year, a bit late though still doable if you ask me. Of course find other jobs before that, just early this month there was a job fair for foreigners held in Shinjuku and organized by Hello Work.
Of course, you could find jobs in any way you like, at the comfort of your home maybe using GaijinPot, CareerCross, Daijob, and the likes. It's up to you, but stop and try to enjoy the New Year first, calm down and relax for a while. Prepare your resume bit by bit. But come 7th of January, go out there and kick ass!
Good luck to you, Iro_otoko13! :)

dcat, I think you are right about determination and ability to cope with the fast changing world. It's the skills that is needed everywhere in the world. At every company they expect you to be able to read stack of books and be able to put them to use the next minute. I have seen little company that put efforts into employee's education. Most Japanese company is 使い捨て、all workers are dispensable. Perhaps that is one healthy way for an organization to survive. High workers indispensability can cause sudden halt of operation if braindrain occurs.
I found a job recently through Daijob, but it's not a seishain position. But it pays well, so what the heck, I think. I will take a look at that 外人向けカリーアフェアin 秋葉原 you mentioned too. Perhaps get a better paying job :)
For irootoko, it's time to show your iro, dcat was right, put all your strength and shining colors into your resume, if you need my help. I do resume editing and reviewing sometimes. I also freelance for Japanese, Chinese, French to English translation, but not viceversa :)
皆さん、良いお年を, may you find a good paying job next year, 色男。

well said dcat!
iro_otoko13,
it takes a lot of perseverance to find a job here in japan especially like us, foreigners. it would really help impress an employer if you can speak their language. otherwise, it would be very hard to negotiate some talks.
try the suggested links by dcat. you'll find a lot of job there. goodluck on your job hunting. ;)

Yes I'm doing that. I am scheduled for an interview with some companies introduced by my schools counselor next year. I am preparing for that now. Thank you for all the encouragement guys. I know myself very well that I am not good at expressing myself but I will do my best to sell myself.
Sorry, I dont know why my post turns like a html code. I erased the black box I always use. If this post turns well I'm sure that box would be the cause. Thanks for the remark.

For a background, I work sa isang multi-national firm with 10,000 employees in Japan. I have a BS, MA and an MBA so sinubukan ko ang Finance for a few years but I ended up sa IT anyway at mas gusto kong nagbabasa ng Data Sheet kaysa Financial Statements.
