Hello TF-mates! Here's one way of exercising our eyes. Let's see who can name or describe the stereogram below. FYI, stereograms are 3D images hidden within another picture. In order to view 3D images, simply stare at the picture until the image starts to take shape. Enjoy staring and share your stereograms here:p

@shiawase, here are some tips for viewing stereograms:

1. Pick a spot on the picture (the middle seems to work best) and just stare at it.

2. Allow your eyes to relax, don't just stare AT the image, try to stare THROUGH it. You'll notice your eyes will go slightly out of focus. This is normal.

3. Keep staring, don't give up, once you begin to see the first image, it gets much easier.

if you do, and nearsighted ka naman, try to remove your contact lenses. stare at the pic without blinking your eyes as much as possible... then you will notice the 3d image will appear as if protruding from the picture...

Hi shiawase and wolfgang, sa umpisa talaga medyo nakakaduling but once you learn the technique, you'll appreciate it! Try changing your distance from the monitor and most importantly you have to focus your eyes. Keep practising!

How Stereograms Work

Humans see in stereo vision. The left eye and the right eye see slightly different angles of the same thing and our brain combines the two images into one vision that has form and depth. The two figures shown above (Hotei-Sama, one of the 7 Japanese gods of fortune) are seen from slightly different angles as might be seen with each eye. If you stare at the image for a little while, the two images should merge into one image, with the appearance of form and depth. The Stereopticon viewers that were popular in the late 1800s worked with this principal.

In stereo vision, the distance between objects is interpreted by our brain to represent space. In the above example, the moon is spaced farther apart than the figure and when viewed in stereo vision appears in back of the figure. The small spheres are spaced slightly closer together and thus appear to be floating in front of the figure.

Here is another example of the effects of spacing. The pair of circles on the top appear as though we are looking down a tube. The pair of circles on the bottom appear to be popping out towards the eye.

Stereograms hide portions of the image in a series of panels. The spacing of the image portions, determine whether the image comes forward or backwards. Stare at the example above. The white circles are spaced closer together and so they appear to come forward more than the dark gray circles which appear to be farther behind. Color and value play an important role as well as they provide a “visual cue” to the objects’ depth. Lighter objects appear to be closer to the viewer than the darker objects.

Did you know that viewing 3d stereograms is a good exercise for your eye muscles and brain as well?

Persevere...it's worth it and some people reckon it improves their eyesight(no kidding!)

For me, 3D stereograms are more interesting to stare at than any other form of pictures;)[maliban na lang kung pix mo, syempre mas interesting siguro, hehe]

The customized software that is used to create a Stereogram uses two images. The first is called a “Depth Map” (shown above) and tells the software how to create the hidden 3D image. White comes out the most while black goes the farthest back. In the illustration above, the sphere is divided into different planes ranging from white to black with 253 shades in between (for a total of 255 steps).

The kind of Stereograms we create have two main elements, the grayscale Depth Map image, and a pattern which the software uses to hide the image. The software interprets depth using the grayscale image and then makes subtle adjustments to the pattern that when viewed as a Stereogram create the impression of depth as you can see in the image below.

i still remember when my boardmate introduced this artwork to me when i was in college.. i thought at first niloloko lang nila ako na merong hidden image.. pero nakita ko rin ... after months of looking at it...

it was 12 years ago.. and when flippy started to post it here, i thought its easy to look at it because i know how to... but to my surprise, hindi ko na ulit makita...:D it took me hours before it came back to me how to look at it the right way... buti na lang nag post si flippy ng ganito ulit.. thanks flippy.. for the headaches that youve cost me.. sa mga hilong sandali habang inaalala ko kung paano tignan ang stereogram:D... and yeah its good for your eyes.. but not to much..

One suggestion lang po.. dont try to look at the image as it is.. try to cross your eyes a little and look not the front image but behind it.. parang titignan nyo po ung soul ng picture.. medyo lalabo ung picture and thats the sign that youre getting it right... your eyes will adjust the focus itself so let it be.. wag nyong isipin na sobrang duling na kayo:D

Bottomline? so worth it.. kung makikita nyo ang image..

ako naman, una kong napag-aralan ang 3D stereograms noong nasa college ako. isa ito sa mga napag-aralan namin sa major subjects ko sa math. una yung "tessellations", tapos "illusions" sa geometry hanggang sa stereograms...nung una super hirap talaga, akala din namin pinagloloko lang kami ng prof. namin kasi wala talaga kami makita, pero nung nalaman namin ang techniques, di na namin tinigilan...

@jimiwest, you're so right, it's really worth it...you get to exercise your eye muscles plus your brain...when you get used to it, it'll take only few seconds before you can see the hidden image or message.
