Hello po :)
I'm a college student in the Philippines so I think I could help you with that.
There are many English Language Centers in the Philippines (esp. in Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, Davao, and Iloilo). If she wants to know how to speak/write/read English first, she should enroll herself in these institutions. (Most of the students in these language centers are Koreans by the way). After the training, she could look for a university or college that has a good reputation in accepting foreign students. I highly recommend the University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, or De La Salle University - Manila. If you're not worried about the costs, then the mentioned universities are for her. She should also choose the course beforehand and get in touch with the International Student Centers of these universities to get more info. :)

kung meron daw po sanang home stay...

sa lasal meron silang katabing condominium don... i think subsidize ng lasal yon ibang unit don para sa mga students nila... siyempre, it will be an added cost for her fees to enroll in lasal... TGI Taft Tower yata name... in between siya ng Gokongwei Building at soccer field ng Lasal...

Xeltran is right. Mas maganda if mag-english lesson muna sya for a year kung hindi talaga sya marunong mag-english at all. as you know, english talaga ang medium of instruction sa tin. if she doesn`t wanna have so much difficulty finding an english language center, dun na lang sya sa university where she intends to enroll a course.

among the three schools (DLSU, ADMU & UST), i guess ADMU is the best, but the most expensive as well, even the dormitories. The cheapest is UST, pero baka mahirapan sya sa paghanap ng magandang dorm na malapit sa campus & at the same time, magandang environment. DLSU, medyo mahal but cheaper than ADMU, and maraming choices for dormitories.

you can also try, UP Diliman. dito mas reasonable na ang tuition, di pa sya mahirapan for dorm kasi nasa loob lang ng campus.

anyway, lahat ng school na yan, they have international student guide in their respective websites. but of course, they are all in english. so i guess, dapat maguide mo sya talaga.

I assume money wouldn't be a problem for her. Mukhang OK sa kanya ang La Salle since andun yung Japan Foundation (?) so madaling ma-feel at home.

One of my friend's Korean bf studies at UST. So mukhang pwede rin dun, kaso parang nakakatakot ang environment (University Belt) baka mapagtripan.

Sa UP Diliman, maganda ang campus, and meron ngang dormitory (International Center) for foreigners.

Sa ADMU, since it is an exclusive school (for the rich) I assume meron silang program para sa mga foreign students.

Pero bago nga siya magenroll ng college, mukhang kelangan niyang magconcentrate sa English muna. Koreans are everywhere (especially in Baguio City) and their main reason for staying in the Philippines is to study English. So it follows na anjan din ang mga English institutions.

scion_cho,
noticed the info above from your post and just hope to enlighten those who aren't aware of the Japan Foundation's existence and purpose.

in spite of the "foundation" in its name which is a kind of misnomer for many Filipinos who often associate "foundation" to mean a group solely dedicated to offering financial assistance, the Japan Foundation is actually an organization partially supported by the Japanese government to promote a variety of cultural and academic activities as a form of cultural exchange between Japan and other countries. its headquarters is in Tokyo and it has an office in Manila where most of its projects have been in the arts and Japanese language promotion.

of course, in the course of their activities, they do offer some form of financial assistance but this is done on an institutional level, such as the funding that JF has provided for some universities that have Japan-related endeavors.

anyway, just for some additional info, I don't think La Salle has any special facilities for Japanese students. they do have a lot of exchange programs with Japanese universities so Japanese students often come for research or one-year study. they have a major in Japanese studies as well under the International Studies department but don't expect the students' linguistic levels to be comparable to native Japanese speakers.

hope this info helps.

I've tried to google some for you, and I came across an article saying

"There are 37 English tutorial schools in Baguio with accreditation from the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority, but such English tutorial schools reportedly number to more than 50."

Sorry, I don't have a specific English school in mind but the above statement shows it shouldn't be hard to find one in Baguio City. Maybe you can try Saint Louis University too, as they supposedly offer a 5-month english proficiency program. link here (English Proficiency Program). (http://www.slu.edu.ph/offices/iflis/index.jsp)

No doubt, other universities (in and out of Metro Manila) have their own programs for foreigner students. I believe that these english schools aren't for Koreans only, but for sure most students would be Koreans.

Good luck!

hanikami-san,

Thanks for the info! I just thought of La Salle because I have noticed that it was a venue for JLPT, and also applications for MS-PhD at Tokyo Tech were coursed through their offices. My knowledge of the Japan Foundation was really that limited. Thanks for the heads up. :coo:

If she wants more info, you could tell her to go to JICC at the Japan Embassy in the Philippines. I'm sure they could help her look for a university to study in.

Sa mismong DLSU-M may Center for English Language (it's within Andrew Bldg. of DLSU).

At least mas safe dun pasukan, dahil kasabay niya yung mga La Salle students, and the university has so many security guards. Maraming Koreans na nag-aaral sa CEL na kumukuha din ng undergrad degree sa DLSU.

Kahit hirap yung mga Koreans sa English, go pa din sila sa DLSU. All classes in DLSU are conducted in English, so mas okay nga na kumuha sya muna ng english courses sa CEL [I don't know how much does it cost].

May mga Japanese students din sa LaSalle. Yung iba JaPinoys, yung iba exchange students for one year -- mainly they're from Waseda & Soka & Ibaraki Univs.

Yung tirahan, no problem: may
LaSallian Center [home for the DLSU athletes & exchange students -although di gaanong kagandahan dun - old building na kasi eh, in spanish-style, wla pang wi-Fi]
EGI (just beside DLSU),
Providence - 3-4 min walk from DLSU entrance gate
Burgundy (in front of dlsu mismo),
Torre Lorenzo - walking distance, 2-min walk from DLSU entrance gate
Cityland - walking distance, 3-4 min walk from DLSU entrance gate
(Forgot the names, may 2 Condo [in front of dlsu mismo, and yung isa naman walking distance from the univ.] pa akong alam which offers dorm rentals and room rentals)

May dormitory sa EGI, Burgundy, & Torre. 5K-7.5K.
Sa Provi & Cityland naman min of 1 year rental ng mga rooms. 9K-10K [studio-type]; 12K-15K [1-2 BR].

Tuition Fees: 42K / term, at max # of units (18-20 units) -- Lib. Arts, Bus. & Eco., Educ. || 50-70 K / term (ComSci, Engr., Science)

1,900+ per unit (Lib. Arts, Bus. & Eco., Educ. Courses)
2K+ per unit (ComSci, Engr., Sciences)

Undergrad Degrees (The ones I can suggest, and the ones that's very easy to take -- meaning mabilis mag-graduate)

Early Childhood (teaching) - Educ.
AB Psych - Lib. Arts

3 years lang ang i-gugugol nya sa DLSU-M para makakuha ng diploma --- assuming she'll take courses purely from Lib. Arts &/or Educ., and assuming din na di siya bumagsak sa mga subjects.

Mabilis ang pacing sa LaSalle, kasi we have 3 terms in one year.

Pero sa totoo lang, kahit saan univs. naman pwede eh, ang big problem, as you said, di siya marunong mag-English. I think 1 year of studying English in a non-Japanese speaking place will help her develop her English speaking skills.

*Anyway, I can only offer info about DLSU. If you have more questions, GO lang! =D

So that's it. Hope this is helpful! ^^,

P.S. (Ask her kung gaano niya ka-gustong mag-aral sa Pinas -- as in how many percent; kelangan kasi 90-100% sure para di masayang yung time and pera kapag na-realize niya na di niya na type mag-aral sa Pinas. And ask her if she's absolutely willing to take time [to study English] and risks [like money] para lang mag-aral sa pinas).
