RP-Japan Friendship Year kicks off; Philippine fiestas in 3 Japan cities set

The Philippine-Japan Friendship Year 2006 has begun, with three-week fiestas in July and August slated in three Japanese cities to mark the year-long celebration.

This developed after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared 2006 as Philippines-Japan Friendship Year.

The President made the declaration under Proclamation 905, citing the close historical ties between the Philippines and Japan and their 50 years of diplomatic relations since the ratification of the Peace Treaty and Reparations Agreement on July 23, 1956.

The festivities for the Philippines-Japan Friendship Year kicked off last Jan. 3 with a 13-day workshop on Japanese music Noh by Jiro Fujita and Dr. Nachiko Umewaka at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

The first of a series of concerts dubbed "Taiko! Tambol!" by the Wa-Daiko Yamato Group of Japan and the Pasasalamat Drumbeaters of Negros Occidental had its premier recently at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and was also staged at the PETA Theater Center in Manila and the Riverbanks Shopping Mall in Marikina City. The last of the series will be held at the Ayala Center in Cebu City tonight.

Likewise, scheduled are a charity concert by pianist Nena del Rosario and violinist Reiko Otari on Jan. 14 at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, a seminar on the Japanese language on Jan. 20-21 in Davao, and a Japanese memorial tour of Luzon, Samar, and Leyte on Jan. 29 to Feb. 4.

Numerous activities have been lined up for February and the rest of the year, with the Philippine Fiesta in Tokyo on July 21-23, Nagoya on July 28-30, and Osaka on Aug. 4-6 as the main event, according to the Philippine Department of Tourism.
Citing the Philippine Fiesta as a big festive celebration, DoT Secretary Joseph Ace H. Durano said it would give the Japanese a glimpse of the uniqueness of the Philippines, its hospitable and cheerful people, rich and diverse culture, world-class products and shopping amenities, sumptuous cuisine, resort lifestyle, beauty and wellness, and other irresistible attractions.

"As such, the event will reinforce the brand recall of 善remium Resort Islands Philippines・which our Koko Doko marketing campaign is establishing in the Japanese outbound market," Durano explained.

The Philippine Fiesta is also geared to generate direct inquiries and bookings on Philippine tour packages that are available from travel agents and wholesalers in Japan.

Supporting the DoT in this project are the Philippine Airlines, Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, Philippine Consulate in Osaka, Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa and the Hilton Hotels in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Comprising the Fiesta are consumer fairs, food festivals and in-store promotions in the three cities, a gala presentation in Tokyo, and a Philippine Friendship Day in Osaka.

The consumer fair will run for three consecutive weekends with a booth housing a travel information counter, a beauty, health and wellness corner, and a premium stage for activities promoting various attractions in the Philippines.
Such activities will include cultural performances of music and dances, video presentation with live narration, bingo with fabulous prizes, appearances by Philippine mascot Koko, boutique and product display, food exhibit and tasting corner, a Philippine Airlines and Japanese tour wholesalers corner, and a talk show by Japanese celebrity Ann Watanabe who will introduce the Philippines with a 30-minute stage presentation.

The food festival will be held at the Hilton Hotels in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka and will have Philippine entertainers, while the in-store promotion activities will be conducted in popular department stores in the three cities.

The gala presentation in Tokyo, an exclusive event will be staged on July 23 with an all-star cast of 160 performers, while the Philippine Friendship Day in Osaka will be a culminating all-star-cast event that will be open to the public.

Note: I (ugnayan) am not connected to any government agency nor Philippine embassy in Tokyo though I'm trying my best to promote Philippine Tourism because I know this would help a lot our country. In my other post on 19th Philippine Work Camp (http://www12.ocn.ne.jp/~saitamay/sub17.htm (http://www12.ocn.ne.jp/~saitamay/sub17.htm)), so far 7 Japanese are sure to fly to Manila next month. Paano pa kaya natin palaguhin ang turismo sa bayan natin?

Celebrating Philippines-Japan relationshttp://www.mb.com.ph/images/spacer.jpg

THE golden anniversary celebration of the normalization of Philippines-Japan diplomatic relations was launched recently with a festive opening event at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), with Japanese Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Yasuhisa Shiozaki in attendance. The Japanese official said Philippines-Japan relations have reached a "peer-to-peer’’ level and have flourished on the principle of mutual confidence.

The relations between our countries have been cemented not only by significant economic relations but also by the fact that people-to-people exchanges have continued to grow over the years. The number of Filipinos living in Japan is larger than that of any other group of Southeast Asian nations. The number of Filipinos visiting Japan annually is also the largest in the region.

Philippines-Japan relations have also been characterized by a genuine and sustained concern of the latter to support Philippine development. The Philippines is one of the top recipients of Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) on a per capita basis, with the cumulative amount of Japan’s ODA totaling more than billion over the past two decades. This aid has gone to various development projects, from infrastructure to education, livelihood, and the promotion of our cultural heritage.

Relations between the Philippines and Japan have expanded to multilateral dimensions with the two countries playing an important role in the region, especially as the Philippines assumes the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this coming July.

In partnership with the rest of the ASEAN and its dialogue partners, the two countries are poised not only to work closely with each other but also to promote peace, good governance, and development in the region.
