Sayson: Good year in 2005, better year ahead
By Homer Sayson

CHICAGO — To borrow Frank Sinatra’s words, my 2005 was “a very good year” for me as a Sun.Star Cebu sports columnist.
It started with a bang in March 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, where I sat ringside for the first Pacquiao versus Morales fight. Three months later in early June, I was at the Palace of Auburn Hills covering Games 3, 4 and 5 of the NBA Finals, a memorable seven-game series that the Spurs won over the Pistons.
Just last Dec.23 in El Cajon, California, I capped the year with my coverage of Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista’s scintillating triumph against knockout artist Gerardo Espinoza.
But if 2005 was productive, 2006 looms as a fat harvest.
BUSY MONTH Judging from my January schedule alone, the year oh-six will bring a lot of ohs and ahs for those who follow the sports pages of this newspaper. So if you’re not a regular Sun.Star Cebu reader yet, join the bandwagon now. Believe me, you don’t want to be left behind with all the fun ahead.
Starting this Jan. 18, I will be in Las Vegas for the Pacquiao-Morales rematch on Jan. 21 at the Thomas and Mack Center. While on the PacMan trail, I’ll pen a daily column along with a diary that will chronicle my sojourn in the Nevada desert.
I will also write a daily grapevine sidebar, articles that will bleed with juicy, insider details on the blockbuster rematch.
Grapevine will be filled with those oh-my-God moments and sleazy gossip stories.
And once you read those, you’ll be gripping these pages, scratching for more.
After the Pacquiao fight, I’ll drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles to cover the Lakers versus Raptors game on Jan.22. Ashley Reed of the NBA headquarters in New York told me the other day that my Lakers pass is ready for pick-up at Staples Center.
I’ll make the most of that Hollywood swing. I’ll take you to a trip inside the Lakers seats, a pricey section inhabited only by the filthy rich and the astoundingly beautiful.
And I’ll you tour you around the players’ parking lot. Who knows, we might see Kobe’s yellow Ducati motorcycle leaning harmlessly beside a slew of Bentleys and SUVs. Or maybe, our eyes will open wide at the sight of Phil Jackson’s blue Porsche.
After the high of a Lakers experience, I will lie low on Jan. 23 and proceed to Freddie Roach’s nest at the Wild Card gym along Vine Street, where I hope to catch a glimpse of Z Gorres and Czar Amonsot.
Sweating and punching for a slice of boxing’s fame and fortune in these United States, Z and Czar are both ALA stable wards. We’ll visit with them, pry about their training regimen, ask how they’re coping in a strange land.
January is usually a slow month for sportswriters. Not for me, though. And certainly not for Sun.Star Cebu readers, who deserve all the best that the world of sports can offer.
