View Full Version : Ilang TF members kaya ang may CCNA certification?

I've been wanting to get this certification pero for some reasons, hindi ko matapos yung buong course or libro. I'm just wondering how many filipinos or TF members out there are Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
Knowing this would likely give me more motivation to put more time and effort to finish this course. This can also serve as a reference for other Filipinos interested in networking if they need to get in touch with senior CCNA's.
I'll start counting as you identify yourselves. Thanks.

i'll contribute first, shuji-san.
since binandera ko na rin lang naman yung pagkapasa ko. :)
i just passed mine last march 12, and received my license card via mail from Cisco just yesterday.
i will help if i can.
you need to get yourself really motivated. picture the end in mind. at mag set ka ng time frame kung kelan mo gusto kumuha ng exam. i think this well help.
plus, the exams have shelf life. if you want to take a particular exam, say like mine 640-801, which is hanggang end of this month na lang (for Japanese, the English version expired last Nov), there are books and sites related to this exam. pag bago na ang exam, half na lang ang similarities sa questions, so you have to study anew. bagong libro na naman. the test now is 640-802. heavy on wan technology.
ano plano mong kunin? japanese test or english?

Hi Itchay, so far you're the only TF member I know with CCNA and also the first one to post. I knew you would find this thread and reply. Thank you.
It's normal to tell others about your passing the test, I would do the same if I ever pass it. It is difficult and takes a lot of preparation, I'm really glad you told us. You inspire other TF members who also want to be certified.
I do allot some time for studying pero minsan I can't do it because of work and family obligations. Having said that, those are also the things that motivate me get certified, medyo complicated no? I have like a small lab at work with 2 2600 series routers and 2 3500 series L3 switches. I love doing the lab exercises, iba talaga ang actual sa libro.
Thanks for the info on 640-802. I've heard about this test pero I didn't know na half na lang ng 640-801 ang similarties. I'm still studying 640-801 material. Hmm.. makes me think of getting a 640-802 reference.
I will undoubtedly take the English test sometime in July. I'm not that good in Japanese after all and I don't want to take the risk.

The problem with studying a new exam is that it's still "new".
Wala ka pang masyadong makukuhang reference materials because everybody is still studying the new exam. Give it 2 or 3 months after release, marami-rami ka na siguro mapupulot na information.
The 50%-only-similarity I mentioned was just a conservative estimate. In reality, baka mas malaki pa diyan ang percentage ng similar questions. Since anyway they're the same technology. Ang mga bago lang is yung sa WAN, at subnetting. There were a couple of subnetting problems already with 801. But I heard mas marami na ngayon, at mas complicated VLSM problem questions.
It's good practice to do lab works. But at CCNA level, the focus is more on the fundamentals - the AD values, which protocol is link-state or not, OSI model, difference between TCP and UDP, etc.
Anyway, I'll post some more as I remember things.
And as an FYI, you have to register first before you can take an exam at any of the testing centers here. Go to Pearson Vue: English Site (http://www.pearsonvue.com/) Japanese Site (http://www.pearsonvue.com/japan/index.html) to register.
Test fee for CCNA is almost 19,000 yen hehe..
This was one of the motivating factors that almost drove me to eat my textbooks just so I won't fail. Pag bumagsak, ang sakit mawalan ng 2 lapad in just under 2 hours. Buti pa kinain ko na lang ng Kobe steak dinner. :D
Hope this will motivate you too. :D

hello shuji,
i forgot to add yesterday..
you're lucky you're in a conducive environment for your networking studies. you're surrounded pala with all those cool equipments. i'm sure kayang-kaya mong ipasa ang CCNA exam mo. in fact, kahit CCNP pa kunin mo, i bet you can pass that one too.
practice mo ring maigi ang ACL. you'll meet a couple of those in the exam, more than the others. also, port security.
memorize the characteristics of each routing protocol and how they're different with the others.
practice on problems that ask you what's the most suitable routing protocol for a certain setup, and the respective subnet addressing.
STP
VLAN
VTP
guess this is it for now. will post some more pag may naalala pa ako.
and before the real experts come in. :D
(i've started with my MCP review.. i find it less interesting than CCNA.. baka dito ako mabulilyaso :D )

I'm kinda annoyed by this exam changes especially when you've already started studying the old curriculum. Well, I understand that technology changes quick and they have to inevitably phase out old ones. I got a TestKing reviewer in PDF format for 640-802. I guess I'll continue studying 640-801 and then refer na lang sa TestKing reviewer.
Thanks for all the tips. まだまだです。I still have a long way to go. Meron na akong Pearson Vue account, I just have to pick a schedule when I'm ready. I was planning to take INTRO first pero I changed my mind. Taking that test would only cost you 11,000 and then another 11,000 for ICND. Thanks again for all the tips and new info.

shuji-san,
you'll get there. that's for sure!
a friend of mine who's now working in IBM Singapore (he got pirated), swear by Testking. he's got a couple of certificates now, by only using Testking materials. he was, in fact, the one who first inspired me to get certified too.
but as i've said in the other thread, certicates don't make you an expert.. experience still is. with the shallow experience that i have, i can never really say i'm an expert on the technology. if fate is good and if i'm still doing the same work down the road, then probably after a couple of years, i can probably say that i am. you, on the other hand, are in a better position.. hands-on experience and a certificate later on. you will be surprised how seldom i get to tinker with our Cisco equipments at work.
so, 802の合格を目指してください!

Yeah, I guess I'm lucky to have access to those equipment, pero hindi rin kumpleto. I have to get money from my own pocket to buy some peripherals to complete some lab exercises. I have already bought 2 DCE-DTE serial crossover cables to simulate a real WAN connection. Each cable cost me Y4,000. I needed 2 para mas maraming routers and pwede kong mai-connect via serial and also to perform the load balancing lab exercise. Nakakagulat nga ang presyo pero that's the real market price. Now, I need to get an AUI Ethernet transceiver for my old 2500 series router.
Thanks for your confidence in me pero I'm not sure until I take the test. 自信がないけで頑張ります。I tend to go into details and I'm afraid to take the test until I'm confident.
Thanks again for all the tips. I love ACL's, I've performed some lab exercises. Nakakatuwa kasi it's very flexible and you can filter IP addresses and routed protocols. In fact, another company is going to connect to our LAN and I have to apply ACL's to our switch port or router port.
I know some senior Network Engineers in our company, they're really good configuring Cisco devices but they're not Cisco certified. One of them started networking before Ethernet was invented. They learned everything through study and most of all, experience. That's the same things I'm doing kasi I believe books alone won't do much until you've actually performed the real thing.
Itchay, it's been 2 days since I started this thread. It seems like you're the ONLY CCNA among all TF community or should I say, among all Filipinos in Japan.:D Cheers...

ask ko lang po, i already took the course a couple of years ago pero hindi ko natuloy due to some circumstances.. 2 semesters lang ang nakuha ko. though may letter and certifications ako for that, i think i have to start from scratch once again to refresh my memory and i guess marami nang developments ang nangyari as you guys said... now, alin po bang CISCO Academy site kayo nagregister at pano ang terms of payment? dati kasi may CISCO-recognized school akong pinapasukan at dun ako nagtake ng course at online exams, they provide complete manuals and lab materials para pagaralan namin. :)
and magkano na po pala nagyon yung license exam, dati kasi nasa $600 pa yun.

Itchay, I can do that too. I can just concentrate on the reviewers like TestKing and Pass for Sure pero I choose to do it the hard way by going through each chapter and doing all the lab exercises. Ganun lang siguro talaga ako, I go too much into details.
You already know all the principles so a little bit more hands-on-experience you'll be an expert in no time. We really seldom tinker with Cisco devices kasi their very stable and durable. Once you've configured the initial settings, leave it as it is and it'll run for years. Less maintenance ang Cisco unlike other brands.

Mr_Ordinary, my case is exactly the same as yours. I also finished the 1st 2 semesters. If you've read Ichay's post, you'll have to pay Y19,000 to take the CCNA test.
Get a Pearson Vue account and find a place (here in Japan) where you can take the test. In my case, sa Jiyugaoka siguro ako magta-take ng test hopefully in July. I don't go to any class, self-study ako. You can buy Cisco books designed for self-study.

don't expect too complicated simulation questions.

Hi Ichay, I'm not really bogged down with the lab exercises. Honestly, I love it and I really learn better. I stopped using books alone kasi walang lab exercises, I find that ちょっとつまらない. I'm now using CNAP, yung may semesters from 1 to 4, with labs.
The other day I configured 2 routers to use RIP, I watched them exchange RIP updates every 30s, ping from one subnet to the other, prevent an interface to send updates and observe the effect. I don't know pero most of the time I just say, "Wow, it works! So this is what the book was talking about." I get a different feeling from that. Next I have to do load balancing with RIP, IGRP routing and play with ACL's again. I don't know how long it's going to take me to get the certificate but one thing I'm sure of right now is that I'm having a blast.:)
I'm using Boson Router Simulator but most of the time it does not work as expected. Iba talaga if you're playing with the real stuff.

if i'm not mistaken, you know japanese right?
to get you started, you can browse ping-t (http://www.ping-t.com/) to get a feel of what the exam is like. you'll read feedbacks from test takers there, at may sample test questions din sila. maganda din daw ang reviewers ng iStudy (http://www.istudy.ne.jp/). for english reviewers, there's Testking (http://www.testking.com/), and another one that shuji mentioned (forgot the name).
at backread ka lang dito sa thread niya, may mapupulot ka pang konting info. and post na lang ulet if you have additional questions.

good luck to you both!

If you think you have the discipline and motivation to do it on your own. Pwede kang magself study. Just grab the official Cisco book and start studying.

CCNA Objectives (without looking)
1. describe the purpose and functions of various network devices.
2. select the components required to meet a network specification.
3. use the osi and tcp/ip models and their associated protocols to explain how data flows in a network.
4. describe common networked applications including web applications.
5. describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the osi and tcp models.
