:) I've been studying japanese (on and off) for about 3 years now. I would say my speaking skill is low-intermediate but my kanji reading skill is definitely basic (I do know katakana and hiragana quite well). A british friend of mine suggested James Heisig's book called 'Remembering the Kanji'. I recently bought vol. 1 of Mr. Heisig's book and started learning his approach. Of all the japanese books I have at home, I found Mr. Heisig's method the easiest to understand in terms of learning how to read kanji. A full review is available here: http://www.kanjiclinic.com/reviewheisigwiig.htm which also includes, for free, the first 125 pages of volume 1.

Note: Wala akong kinalaman kay Mr. Heisig o sa kanyang publisher. Gusto ko lang i-suggest yung book niya doon sa mga nag-aaral magbasa ng kanji. On average, I have learned and is learning about 10 kanji's a day (which can translate to about 300 kanji's a month...and if I continue to religiously study his approach, I can learn more than 2,000 kanji's by December this year when I hope to pass 1-kyuu or 2-kyuu).

Hindi ka magsisisi panzar. I know of at least 2 gaijins who used this approach by Heisig. One passed the 1-kyuu and the other the 2-kyuu. The book has a second volume where Heisig teaches the onyomi and the kunyomi.
