MANILA (Reuters) - Mudslides triggered by heavy rains buried hundreds of houses and a school in the central Philippines on Friday, killing at least six people and raising fears of a far higher death toll, officials and witnesses said. Read more (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/weather_philippines_ landslide_dc;_ylt=As Qm1YiKr1u5vxMuaH7zMG 2s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2 Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ--)
So sad. :(
Grabe to 1,500 missing, at least 200 dead. Pero parang nakalimutan na agad a few months later...and now this tragedy.
Add over-logging to the equation at ganito ang labas. :(
2005 BBC World Challenge (http://www.theworldchalleng e.co.uk/finalists4.html).

Even an elementary school full of students got buried. :(
It doesn't make sense why the authorities would wait for something like this to happen before taking the necessary steps to prevent it, or at least taking the necessary precautions to reduce the number of potential casualties if such a disaster occurs.

.. reminds me of the flood that hit a town in leyte a couple of years back.same old issues cropped up;illegal logging, slash and burn system of farming , etc. the funny thing is every committee and task force ever organized is ordered to this and that ..investigate, evaluate and recommend . so after a couple of days/weeks they give out recommendations so as to avoid having the incident happen ever.politicians grandstand...then the public forgets.same old story !
no tangible long term plans ..tons of press releases ..photo opportunities .it's sick really sick sick sick...
this is really sad and very unfortunate . when will we ever learn .

wag na tayong magulat kasi nabanggit na yan sa Bible na sa last days eh puro calamities, just have faith in God for His protection:
21 For that will be a time of greater horror than anything the world has ever seen or will ever see again. 22 In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, the entire human race will be destroyed. But it will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen ones. 42 So be prepared, because you don't know what day your Lord is coming. -Matthew 24:21,22,42 NLT

When i learned about this tragedy in Leyte, i was completely shocked... I cried and cried because i pity our kababayan who were buried in the mud. Let's pray for them. Nakakakilabot ang pangyayaring ito. My co-trainees here are asking me, hey, what happened to your country?

Isa na namang napakabigat na trahedya.
May those who unfortunately lost their lives rest in peace,
and the others overcome the hardships that they will face.
Andami nating tragedies, halos taon-taon, yong iba natural, yong
Kailan kaya tayo matututo.

Sana makatulong ang TF sa mga kababayan natin biktima ng trahedya, even in your own little way.... :)

Sunod-sunod yata ang disaster :( Tsk tsk... I have never been to Leyte... Kalbo na ba mga bundok dun? Is there still illegal logging? Para kasing super vulnerable sila sa landslide everytime there's rain... It shouldn't happen if people protected the trees/nature there. I can only give prayers for now.

Mas grabe pa ito sa Ultra Tragedy, imagine, thousands of people died but we will see if President Arroyo will ever say that it was because of deforestation due to illegal logging, etc...syempre, she will save her ship from sinking...tsk tsk tsk it happened years ago in Leyte, pero hindi natuto ang tao at gobyerno or sadyang walang magawa ang mga taga-Leyte sa illegal loggers, miners, etc dahil sa malalakas ang kapit sa mga taong dapat eh nagbibigay proteksyon sa mga mamamayan na nasasakupan.

The solution there is to find the right counterpart in the Philippines. I usually partner with nuns and our partner NGOs for these missions. Gusto ninyong i-course through sa kanila.

Maraming nag-abot o nagbigay na ng tulong galing sa iba't ibang bansa, Including US and Japan. Sa katulad nating walang kakayahang tumulong financially, maybe through our prayers makakatulong tayo.

We can pool together
1/ funds that will be sent to red cross or any other reliable NGO
2/ goods for door-to-door box and pool the fund for shipment as well
I have a portable water purifier, some clothes and other house gadgets
that I can send. The purified will be most useful in this situation if it
can reach a deserving hand.
Several
friends sent goods to us and we sent one box.
Anybody who can volunteer to do 2 ?

Here's a letter from the Philippine Red Cross in response to our AsiAid Charity Concert for Philippine Mudslide Victims:
20 February 2006
Dear Mr. Manalang and Sister Venus Hannah:
On behalf of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), I would like to thank you for your response to our most recent tragedy. Indeed, it is great to have learned that there are people like you who are willing to extend their help amidst other personal and social obligations. Because of you and FCMN International Mission Center, we are pleased, hopeful and confident that we will function accordingly in aiding the mudslide victims of Southern Leyte with the following Red Cross actions:
1. Retrieval of dead and Rescue of survivors
2. Manage the staging area and render medical help to injured
3. Tracing service
4. Provide psychosocial support (stress debriefing)
5. Relief Assistance
6. Medical Assistance
A rain-soaked mountainside disintegrated in an unstoppable wall of mud last Friday, burying hundreds of houses and an elementary school in the village of Guinsaugon. A total of 2,700 individuals, consisting of 540 families, have been affected. As of the moment, the death toll is 72. There have been 57 survivors, 281 houses damaged and 1,557 evacuees at four operation centers. To date, the Disaster Management Team and other volunteers of PNRC still continue to search for and rescue more than 946 people missing under. In this light, we are open to both monetary and in-kind donations with the following details and procedures:
1. For our Peso Account:
Bank: Metro Bank, Port Area Branch
Account Name: The Philippine National Red Cross
Account #: SA-3-041-63122-8
Bank: BPI, UN Branch
Account Name: The Philippine National Red Cross
Account #: SA 8114-00309-4
For our Dollar account:
Bank: Metro Bank Port Area Branch
Account name: The Philippine National Red Cross
Account #: SA 2-151-00218-2
SWIFT CODE: MBTC PHMM
*Please fax your deposit slip to (63-2) 5270575 / 5255654 / 4040979 for us to acknowledge your donations accordingly.
2. In-kind Donations
May we get the details on what exactly you plan to send here. Is it worth the shipment? Our concern for you is that the shipment fee might be costlier than the goods themselves which is why we encourage monetary contributions. We prefer purchasing of goods locally not just to save you from handling fees but also to help the economy of the local area/s affected. However, should you deem that your in-kind donations are of a great necessity and worth the shipment cost, we do appreciate all of the items and we will allocate them to the many beneficiaries.
In connection to this, you may donate the following medicines:
a. Amoxicillin (125 mg / 5 ml for kids; 500 mg capsule for adults)
b. Paracetamol (for fever, flu)
c. Mefanamic Acid (for pain)
d. Hydrite Tablet (for diarrhea)
Bottled water, sleeping mats and ready-to-eat foods are necessities as well.
Please send your donations to:
The Philippine National Red Cross
C/o Mr. Victor A. Liozo, the Secretary General
or Ms. Gwen Pang, the Director of Fund Generation

Anda Circle, Port Area, Manila

Please address directly to Red Cross, not to the aforementioned individual recipients, for you to not be charged with tax.

The church and mission group's February 2006 Prayerline sent to us in Japan was received on February 17. One of the prayer requests: "Pray for pastors and Christian leaders to encourage more local farmers to plant rubber trees in about 300-500 hectares of land. Pray for the need of funds to conduct lectures and stewardship seminars to 60-137 barangays in the Pacific towns from St. Bernard to Silago."
We received this prayer concern the very day a baranggay in St. Bernard was buried with mud due to avalanche. May we can continue to support the mission endeavor of this group in conducting seminars to the local farmers in Leyte.
I would like to list some of the countries na talagang full support at nagbigay ng mga donations.
U.S.A

Malaysia
Japan

SMALL BOMBS TO CREATE A CREEK
As you were mentioning "improvising a creek" for the
mud. Furthermore, as you said we are doing these
against time. Then, I am wondering...
if it's worth having (small powered) bombs to be put
in series that will create a duct upon explosion. This
way it can speedily create a way to the mud going to
lake or oceans.
I am sure we have enough experts on bombs in the
military or MINING INDUSTRY on how to do this...
with less harm to those around...
just a thought.
