Japanese social insurance system
All regular employees of workspace in Japan regardless of nationality are required to participate in the Employees' Health Insurance System and the Employees' Pension Insurance System, provided the number of hours and the number of days they work at the workspaces are generally at least three-fourths those of other ordinary employees of those workplaces.

As proof of coverage, the insured person receives a Health insurance Certificate for the Employees' Health Insurance System and a Pension Handbook for the Employees' Pension Insurance System.

Employees must join the insurance Systems when they begin working at their workplaces. Monthly insurance charges are determined according to the insured person's salary, and are shared equally between the employer and the insured person.

Employees' Health Insurance Benefits
When receiving treatment for illness or injury in Japan, the insured person or dependant should present the Employees' Health insurance Certificate at the registration desk of the hospital or clinic. As of 70% of the expenses will be paid by the Employees' Health Insurance System, the insured person needs to pay only 30% of the medical expenses.

Employees' Pension Insurance Benefits
If the insured person has participated in the public pension system for at least 25 years, they will in principle, receive the Employees' Pension from when they reach 65 years of age until their death. When a non-Japanese citizen on a short-term stay in Japan who has participated in the Employees' Pension Insurance System for at least six months but has not received any benefits in Japan, they will be paid a lump-sum benefit according to the length of participation.

actually 3 years lang ang pwedeng makuha and that too when you leave japan permanently.so kahit 8 years na kaming nagbabayad, 3 years lang pwedeng makuha. we were told by the company. this i wanted to clarify.

we were told that when you lose your job (not by voluntary resignation), there will be some allowance. magkano kaya ang allowance? (not that we will lose the job naman, maganda lang na alam)

kapag nag-resign ka din daw sa company, may lump sum amount ka na makukuha ...

totoo kaya yan? planong lumipat ng kumpanya :D

wala kasing english manual ... dami tuloy tanong ...

Hello makulit,

Just to make it clear: the pension system (nenkin) is not the same as the unemployment insurance system (shitsugyou hoken).

When a person loses his job, he gets a monthly allowance from the unemployment insurance system providing he has paid into it a minimum number of months (di ko na matandaan kung ilan - nasa bahay yung manual). If I remember right, the amount is a percentage of your salary.

You do not get anything from the pension system if you lose your job. You will only be eligible to receive pension after paying 25 years and reaching 65 years old. They are very strict about this, and there are many loopholes to disqualify you - so check with the pension office of your city hall. If you pay 24 years and 11 months, then stop paying for some reason, you will not get your pension.

If you are employed by a small company, please bring your pension booklet to the city hall and check if your employer is indeed remitting the monthly deductions from your salary. There have been instances of unscrupulous employers who have siphoned off the monthly contributions deducted from the employees' salaries, specially if the business is doing poorly. The government will not take responsibility for such problems - so you have to protect yourself by checking personally. Mabuti na yung sigurado.

Also, if you are below 35 years old, do not expect to get any significant amount of pension. By the time you are 65, Japan's pension system will be so heavily strained that it will be nearly bankrupt. Better to consider the pension contribution as just another form of tax. Huwag umasa sa pension para di mabigo at magsisi.

hi mystic_girl,

tama po kayo that around 50% ng monthly income mo is what you will get as monthly unemployment insurance. although under po ito sa coverage ng koyou hoken, they have another official term for this. and that is shitsugyou hoken (unemployment insurance).

dagdag detalye din po..
we can only get a maximum of 3 months unemployment allowance. if after 3 months, wala pa din po tayong trabaho, wala na po tayong matatanggap. and when applying for this, one requirement is our capacity to work again and we we must show that we are willing to and will be looking for another job. we will be required to report at a regular period our job-hunting activities, as well.
