Judas Iscariot's reputation as one of the most notorious villains in history could be thrown into doubt with the release of an ancient text on Thursday.
The Gospel of Judas, a papyrus document from the 3rd or 4th Century AD, tells the story of Jesus' death from the fallen disciple's point of view.

"In actual fact, knowledge that there was a document called the "Gospel of Judas" and of its basic content has always been known. The early Christian writer, Ireneous, mentioned it in his work "Against Heresies," in which he attached the various unbiblical doctrines which were being taught by various groups in his time. Writing in about A.D.180, Ireneous describes a group called the Cainites who revered various characters in the Bible including Cain, Esau, Korah and Judas, whom the Biblical text described as evil."
