Nasa Masters Course ngayon first year..
I just want to share you my tiresome and exciting experiences today, my first day of classes for this semester.
I attended classes from 8:50-12 nn and 1-4:10 PM. As usual all lectures were held in Japanese. Not just a lecture on my major subjects but a language class as well. All were large classes , about 100-150 students in each class. My Inorganic Chemistry Class was indeed disgusting. To my surprise the sensei immediately gave us a quiz after his lecture. Aside from the fact that I cannot solve the highly mathematical problem, I didn’t understand the question in Japanese as well.
Here comes the afternoon class. My first class was a Geosystem and energy engineering. The sensei was full of energy with a well-modulated and awakening voice. During the class he discussed about the different sources of energy in the world. From this lecture I knew that the Philippines is the second producer of Geothermal Energy next only to the USA. I didn’t know that. Two of my sit mates then became curious about the Philippines.
My second class was the Introduction to Environmental Science and Ecoengineering. The main lecture hall of our graduate school was occupied with about 150 freshmen students taking the course and professors who will be teaching the subject. As a foundation subject for the MS program , it is taught by most professors of the graduate school. The first meeting was an orientation about the subject by the dean of our graduate school, Graduate School of Environmental Studies. He did an overwhelming presentation. He started with flashing the speech of a 12-year old Sebuane Suzuki from Canada, a representative of the children of the world during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) Rio Summit 1992. Suzuki mentioned about the destruction of the environment and claims the future that belongs to them, the children who will inherit the Earth.
Our dean explained further what was said by Suzuki by asking several questions What is the level of consciusness of our young people on the existing environmental problems? How aware are the parents about these problems that their children might suffer in the future? Should we do recycling? Zero emission? Can technology replace the main energy source now that emit a huge amount of CO2 with nuclear fuel? Are environmental problems and economic development incompatible?
Until he ended with the statement that there are many aspects in our lives that cannot be answered by science and technological innovations…Is economic growth an absolute necessity? After sufficient food, clothing, and properties what comes next? What is happiness? (幸福とは何か – Koufuku to wa nani ka?) And he said in terms of the degree of happiness, the Philippines is in the world.. ( the Philippines is the world?tama ba pagkaintindi ko?) the Japanese sentence written in his PowerPoint and on my handouts is ([幸福度はフィリピンが世界… TIME]誌調査(koufukudo wa firipin ga sekai.. According to time magazine survey .. At umiling iling ang mga Hapon…he further stated where is Japan then? in terms of GDP per capita more than 30 bai (times) daw sila sa firipin pero asan daw ang koufuku nila?
