thanks for this, paul-san! i am suddenly reminded by the opportunity once recommended to me by a group of japanese that i met through my line of work. one of them told me that i have a high chance of getting accepted since my work exposure is substantially on that field that he was suggesting!
now, i realized why don't i give him a call and try my luck!

Of course, probably the reason why more Japan-trained professionals go back to the Philippines (or go somewhere else) is because of the culture and language barrier more than anything else.
The only thing unfortunate about the article is the small picture. :)

I am not sure if it is the general trend, but there are also good career opportunities for those who went back because of the unique skills acquired here. Those skills match what the Japanese companies/businesses in the Philippines want. I know a few who are fairly high up in the companies there - country managers, director, general manager of a big department, sales manager.
This is true. I know many former students who went back to the Philippines instead of work here because of the language. Yet, I also know as many who mastered Nihongo and went back to the Philippines for well-paying jobs in Japanese companies.
@Janer: any particular reason why all the people in the picture are women? :)

I'm pretty sure PHILAJAMES can give you some numbers regarding this. Another reason why some of them go back home is because of the binding contract they have with the institutions or companies where they came from.
The picture is actually quite large in the actual newspaper.
How about you peeps? When do you plan to go back? Or...do you even plan to? Last year I thought in 3 years time I'd be ready, but right now I think it will be another 4 or 5. :O Yes I know it's selfishness on my part. I only think of myself and my family. Pero sa totoo lang ang dami pang 不安 pag umuwi na for good, specially concerning work. How about you?

Thanks for sharing that, Paul. I finally met the cream of the crop at Timog. Nice to meet you, fellow scholars. Can we work together to help the country? Are you interested to share what you're doing now or wish to do to help the country? I am looking forward to your reply.

No one raised hands to your challenge Ka Tonyang. I guess they are too humble to be called 'cream of the crop'.
I am sure I am not part of it either. Cream of the crap - perhaps :D
With all due respect, I am sure there are many here in Timog who are doing their best in their lives, their own jobs or businesses. They are a cream of the crop in their own rights too. So I think your call goes to a lot wider audience. I saw that thread about organising amongst TF'ers (with the aim of finding something positive that can be collectively done ?). That is surely a good step forward.

Thanks for this message, Dsouthpaw. I also know that we know our responsibilities. Really true that intelligent ones have the greater burden to share to do something for the country.
As you know too, Dsouthpaw, lahat tayo ay konektado... kahit anong iwas nating sumali sa problema o makiisa sa solution, apektado tayo either directly o indirectly.
We cannot ignore the fact that we can do something... the fact that we can build theories and techniques that manifest our excellence in the field we're into, those are proofs enough that we could change the world. Pag pinagsama-sama iyan then may pira-piraso tayong tinututukan, ang ganda ng bayan natin...
We do have reservations. Ayaw natin ang pulitika etc... pero may kagalingan tayo para di harapin ang pulitikang ito at may power tayo through our numbers.
But then, we'll go on discussing this over and over... sayang ang panahon pa rin Dsouthpaw... right in this thread, there's a handful of them already.
May sasagot kaya? I am sure maraming makakasagot... pero hands off at hindi hands on.

My experience is also probably not far from that number.
People will always be willing to 'talk'. And talk only they will.
But then again, I think that number - which is based on your actual experience - is true not only for the scholars. Palagay ko ganyan tayong mga Pilipino, in general. Talk about problems - and you will hear 'expert' opinions. Complain about problems and blames will come flying from all over the place.
Talk and ask about doing even small solutions - and there will be deafening silence.

From the positive perspective, mabuti na lang may 1 o 2 pa sa bawat 100 na nakakausap mo Ka Tonyang. Even at that rate you have been affecting many peoples lives towards the better, but it will not grow to a considerable number that may affect the society as a whole.
Bill said he is spending some 30B$ for philanthropic things. The latter two - hp founders - as well as their families have also been doing lots of public services - pero mainly sa bansa nila.
Having lots of money is good, specially if those are going to be used to help.

Ito pa ang isa. Still fresh in the news. Si Buffett rin, apparently the 2nd richest person on earth, next to Bill Gates, is also donating a small amount of money to charity. To the tune of some tens of billions of US$ lang yata. The guy apparently is giving away most of his wealth for philanthropy. According to one news, most of it going to Bill Gates foundation. Magkaibigan pala yong dalawa. Well, birds of the same feather flock together :).

There's a model of remittance cooperative I am suggesting for OFWs in Japan. Bukod pa iyong FISJ (http://fisj.wordpress.com ).

Just my own opinion. The remittance business will probably be formed more quickly and surely if at first there are just a few involved, particularly those who have the ideas and the drive to put those ideas into real action. It is difficult to move things forward and make things happen if most members need to be pulled. Nakakapagod. The business has to be moving before the mass follow suit and join.
Same with the school. I hope you will find people who can lead the actions needed to make it move forward.
Your expertise as a career is in the general financial world. Any potential business in that area ? Yes, the remittance business is finance related, but I guess it is primarily geared towards OFW. How about something that targets the Japanese market?
Good luck and more power!!

Thanks, Dsouthpaw...
We couldn't deny it. Concerned ba tayo? If yes, anong dapat nating gawin?
Kaya sorry na lang tayo...do we deserve this?

I heard from an old Korean friend, that long time ago in south Korea, the government sent lots of scholars to different countries to study. They all went back to Korea after studying inorder to have this what they call brain storming. Then boom! That's how they started to develop.

I have been in Japan for four years now and in those four years, there has always been the desire to come up with something or to join in any program that could help our country but it remained as, well the "desire" or the "thought". Probably because like me, most of us must have been swamped with the stress and work in our respective schools, at trying to impress and please our senseis, and well, just trying to live through this Japan experience, one day at a time and then suddenly we notice that it has been a couple of years and more. (notice that i just registered at TF...errr I just discovered TF heheheh)
But I digress with my excuses so let me break the silence, raise my hand and say, if you have that idea or ideal now, for the betterment of our country and countrymen, count me in... heck its idealistic but....

Around September last year, I read about this great woman who has been so relentless at organizing and helping her fellow Filipinos whether in Japan or in the Philippines. That article was written to remember her and her works and to inspire anybody who reads it. I remember telling myself and my friends how sad that such a full and active life for a very kind and active woman who still has a lot to do and a lot of people to help has to end shortly.
I just registered at TF this month and then I saw this thread. I replied to it in the hope the "Tonyang" would read it and be glad that at least there was one who replied to her call. This morning, I saw another thread about her and I realized she was that woman I read about last year.
Now I know that the reply I have been waiting for wont come. I hope though that there will be more persons like her and that her life would serve as an inspiration to all of us. Rest in peace Ka Tonyang and may your legacy live on.

you should have met her, rya-san. then, you would have been more inspired, so inspired it will push you into action. that was her effect on me. she really was a woman full of vision, but a realist at the same time. she had this kind of balance that made all those visions turn into something tangible, one at a time.
and i think you can continue what she's started even without a reply from her. she has left enough of a legacy here for those who want to walk the same road as she did. just browse around the forums, search for her posts. she was a knowledge-sharer. you will learn from her postings, learn enough to start you off right in your endeavor.

Very true Itchay san. Each of us should do whatever we can to effect the change we want, no matter how little they may be.
