the best way ba ika mo? i think walang short cut to learn it. just learn it by heart, add some unending effort then you will see the result in the very short time. the idea is the more spend time studying it, the more and the faster you will learn Japanese Language.
my advise is, learn some Japanese bad words. he he :D . madaling matandan. bakit kaya? proven na kasi iyon. kahit sino tanungin mo na hindi marunong magjapanese maraming alam na bad words.

Lakas ng loob na makipag-usap sa kanila(sa mga Japanese). Sa mga kasama mo sa bahay, kahit sa mga kapit-bahay. Pero, mag-iingat ka rin kase hindi lahat ay madaling pakisamahan. Magkaroon ka ng maliit na notebook, at doon mo isulat ang mga new words na naririnig mo araw-araw. Manood ka ng mga Japanese drama sa TV. Kahit hindi mo masyado maintindihan, maririnig mo ang tamang intonation. At sana mayroon kang Japanese learning books, for you to self-study. Good Luck.

Watch children's am/pm programs on tv. If you don't have kids yet, visit your local ward and ask for community japanese schools, it's conducive to study with others. Try to learn 5 words per day. Google online Japanese tutorials. Do not resent your inability to grasp the language this early. Dedication and patience, great tools next to a handy dictionary :) .

Puwedeng manood nang japanese drama .... pag may na pick up kang words na mukang palagi mong naririnig o ginagamit, search for it ....
I will not recommend you to work sa omise, pinakamadaling matutong mag japanese pag doon ka nagtrabaho ....
Kaya ang mas maganda, enroll on a japanese classes provided by your city office.
If you can afford the hobby of going to karaoke, try to learn singing japanese songs. Madali kang matututong magbasa nang hiragana, some kanji, and even get use to japanese words ...
Get a japanese textbook, ask what is best .... try to study it even at least two or thrice a week ...

learn it by heart like what striver san said because if your not interested you will not learn.
watch tv drama or even cartoons like what galadriel san said it is a another way to learn how to use some words in a sentence.if you can hear some words not familiar to you try to write it down and look for the meaning.
communication is another way also like what pilipinas san said.try not to use our language in a conversation.
self study is what ive done before. everday i make it sure i learned 1 word.
Try to listen some nihongo songs..
Try to read dictionary ..
Most especially always login to tf and you will learn diff. nihongo words from our tf members..
Before single ako may date ako lagi;)

natutu ako sa panood ng japanese drama....or kahit yung mga variety show nila...ung mga words na palagi ko naririnig, sinusulat ko tapos hanapin ko yan sa dictionary....
self learning..;)
tapos mail sa kietai.....
huwag kang gumamit ng romanji...kasi mas mabilis kang matuto at magbasa pag katakana/hiragana or konting kanji ang gagamitin mo..pagdi mo maintindihan..search mo sa dictionary..
pagnamemail ako sa mga kaibigan kong nihonjin or sa asawa ko, i usually use hiragana at konting kanji...para matutu ako...:)
at makipag-usap,kahit barok ang nihonggo mo try to talk to them..pagmali naman kasi sasabihin din sayo...at dyan ka lalong matutu...:)
sana makatulong sayo ..
goodluck...

hey guys.. for me, the effective way is to watch tv and I do sometime check the assignments of my kids.. Try to read their homeworks.. sabay ka lang.. Pero kung di mo getzs.. ok lang, baka naman ma-stress ka kakabasa..:D .. Still didn't try to go to Japanese classes but I have a news paper from the City Hall and sez the price is 3,000 daw once a week.. But maybe, you will learn Nihongo, in your own capacity and through experiences.. :)

yeah, nag inquire nga ako sa City Hall, kaya mga nalaman kong 3,000, they gave me the newspaper.. but hindi tama sa schedules ko.. every Weds. sya.. my child comes home early on Weds.. E dapat talaga pag maliit pa ang kid mo, nasa bahay ang nanay.. my kid always managed to escape, e nakakatakot ang panahon ngayon dito sa Tokyo.. maraming henna ogissan na nag aabduct ng mga bata and we got already some cases of that in the school.. And lately, may renraku kami na any time, we will pick up our kids in case of emergencies.. Malayo naman ang japanese school na yon sa bahay namin.. But Im planning to get my own japanese tutor in the house.. thanxs for the advice..

hello to everybody
mahirap sa una halos maiyak-iyak ako pero lakas ng loob and determinatin to learn. sige mga ate!! back to school and ganbatte!!!

hi ulit ;-)
For me,
*Magbasa ng Nihonggo book kahit paunti unti lang, minsan may nabibili ding Dictionary na may CD nakaattached parang Starter kit mo to study..(mayroon ako nun nung nagbebenkyoo/nag-aaral pa lang ako)., basta wag lang bigla, "One at a time".Kung naguong araw puro numbers , numbers muna..From Japanese terms of Aisatsu or greetings, Introducing Yourself to a Friend, Numbers, Days in a week, months, year, etc.
*Makinig ka ng mga Japanese Songs kahit di mo maintindihan lahat ng Lyrics.
*Manood kang JDorama /Japanese Drama na may English Subtitle din, nagenjoy ka na matututo ka pa at the same time.., at para marinig mo din yung mga" Actual Pronounciation" ng mga Hapon sa words/kotobas nila., sa simula hindi mo alam yung imi/meaning pero kalaunan matatandaan mo din.:) :) :)
Ganbate.Kaya mo yan.

the best way is to get a :tiphat: formal education....pinili kong foreign language ang Nipongo nung nasa college ako....ewan nga ba.....may patutunguhan pala makakapag asawa pala ako ng hapon yun pala ang lovemap ko...daahil nga may other foreign languages na akong natutunan, to clear out all the obstruction pipiliin ko sa susunod kong landing sa Japan sana for good na nga ang maging decisyon ko....I'll be enrolling sa isang college:yippee: diyan sa JP :japanese: at mag major ng Japanese langauge. Though complete ako sa Japanese dictionaries, books, CD's at may internet pa...mahirap kasi geographically where I am at the moment. With the support of my in-laws and husband I know I'll be fine:) in twisting my tongue to Japanese pronunciation, grammar and delivery.
mas madali tlga matuto magjapanese when you have somebody to talk to, sa mga dvd's din nakakatulong specially pagnakaset sa nihonggo and subtitles na english... sa ngayon indi na ko nagwwork at asawa ko lang ang kasama ko dto sa bahay and wala pa akong kids nahihirapan ako and feeling ko na unti unting nalilimutan ko na ung ibang salita, ang nangyayare ngyon is nakakaintindi ako pero ako nmn ang hndi na nakakapagsalita ng derecho :( :mad:huwaaa...busy pa nmn mashado ang asawa ko at paguwi sa bahay sandali lang kami mag-usap:( puru kalokohan pa napaguusapan namin kaya wala na c ecks..nabobo na:confused: ...pero now indi ko na kaya ang ganito kaya start ulit ako at least 5words everyday and using them sa sentence kesihodang magmuka akong loka loka sa bahay nagsasalita mag-isa..:D (wala nmn tao eh ako lang..hekhekhek)...n ow na nakita ko na meron pala sa cityhall na ganyan, kakausapin ko asawa ko na puntahan namin pag may time na, kc nagmumukang cave girl na ko dto sa bahay; walang human interaction, para akong na house arrest...LOL ( Laughing Out Loud )...salamat sa tf at may nalaman nanaman ako bagong info ...:D

I think nasabi na ng previous posters yung mga possible ways to do in order to learn the language . The most important is to do this constantly, in order to maintain the language- not necessarily on a daily basis, but the golden rule of studying the languages goes: better little and often, than a lot and ocassionally. Basically this summarize all. :)

Una, mag-asawa ka ng hapon. With daily inter-actions you'll pick-up words.
Pangalawa, mag-anak ka. That way your forced to learn to keep up with your baby. And you might even learn from her. Hence, giving birth to your own tutor.
thrid, watch cooking shows. You might notice in cooking shows, everytime they touch something they always mention its name first and then continue on to explain its purpose.

To get back on the topic, i have to say that having japanese boyfriends or girlfriends must be very effective in learning the language, indeed. ;)I somewhat agree to that, but the opposite is also true sometimes:
proficiency in the language is a good tool to get a Japanese boyfriend or girlfriend.;)
Besides having bfs/gfs, I made some suggestions a long time ago in another thread (http://www.timog.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103 ).
1. use a dictionary written in japanese, not in romaji
2. use an old-fashioned "book" dictionary, not an electronic dictionary
3. watch a lot of tv (especially anime and drama) during your free time
4. place your wa-ei dictionary AND your kanji dictionary close to the tv
5. try to make as many japanese friends as possible and practice newly learned phrases with them. ask them to correct you if you made a mistake (some tend not to)
6. learn nihongo in nihongo, not in english! (or any other language)
once you've perfected the kanas, use 1. above and throw/give away your romaji wa-ei dictionaries! when learning nihongo, discard your english language "common sense". do not try to construct nihongo sentences in the same fashion. remember, "common sense" in the philippines may not always be "common" in japan, and vice versa. the same thing goes for the language.
some filipinos (non-japanese english-speaking people in particular) become frustrated in learning nihongo because they tend to use this "common sense" that they know in english, when learning nihongo...
I somewhat agree to that, but the opposite is also true sometimes: proficiency in the language is a good tool to get a Japanese boyfriend or girlfriend.;)
Besides having bfs/gfs, I made some suggestions a long time ago in another thread (http://www.timog.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103 ).
I completely agree Dax! :) That's why I still try to go back home early at the nighttime just to watch the drama of the day... Yesterday, I watched "僕の歩く道 (http://www.ktv.co.jp/bokumichi/)”. Heheh...:D Seriously, it's good.
One thing that I would add to the list is to not limit yourselves among foreign circles. You see, most Filipinos I know always go together with other Filipinos and foreigners here in Japan. Not that there is something wrong with that, it is just that this might not be very conducive to learning Japanese language and culture. (Mind you, culture and language are so related that we wouldn't have a good grasp of one if we don't have the same level of understanding of the other.) We have to remember that the Japanese themsemselves are closed society (at least in the beginning), so we need to do extra effort to be accepted into their circles and groups. Japanese joining foreign groups are very rare and more of an exception, so we must do it ourselves.
If you are still a student, maybe it's a good idea to join school/university clubs and circles. For those who don't go to school anymore, there are always sports clubs and hobby groups in every city in Japan, maybe you could drag yourselves there, or take an advantage if you are fortunate enough to get an invitatiton. In the beginning, they will be very quiet, but be patient and follow all their instructions and suggestions as much as you can. Don't be a nuisance by questioning a lot of things, you'll have your chance to question things when you have shown your allegiance to the group and when they already accepted you as their member. Don't worry so much, soon enough you will have your nomikais (飲み会) and from then on you'll see how they'll open up to you one by one as time goes by...:)

So many TF- ers have already given very good advice. :thumb:
Something that might not have been mentioned is making "kanji- cards". I played memory with those cards to learn new words. At the front- side i wrote down a Japanese word in kanji, at the back of the card i wrote it down in romaji and also the meaning of the word in English.
Then i tried to memorize the words and repeated as often as i could. I used to take them
everywhere: at home, in the bus, train, everywhere even when i went to the toilet!:yesyes:
If i had difficulties to memorize a word, i even sticked the card on the toilet wall. So everytime when i went to the toilet i try to memorize that word again. I also used to stick cards on objects. For example on a chair i would stick the word "isu" (chair in Japanese)
Another way which i found very useful was to record my own voice. To learn new words and phrases. It's also useful to record radio programms, put on a headphone and repeat over and over again. It doesn't matter if you can't understand it completely, you will get accostumed to the sounds of Japanese language.
I hope that my advice is helpfull to you,:growl:

Wow ....thats a great idea! I used to record my own voice rin before...though natatawa ako paminsan-minsan because...parang okashi sa pandinig ko yung intonation ng voice ko..:D and sometimes inire-record ko rin yung NHK Nihongo lesson nila before, na kg saan ay mabibili rin yung texbook nung program na available sa mga bookstore..

Thank you Mikki! I can speak Japanese but unfortunately my knowledge of Tagalog is poor ( My wish is to learn more about Tagalog. Mails from TF-ers wiil hopefully help me. :) )
I understand that you like the idea of recording ones own voice.:jiggy: :music:
You also quoted Ecks:
"...pero now indi ko na kaya ang ganito kaya start ulit ako at least 5words everyday and using them sa sentence kesihodang magmuka akong loka loka sa bahay nagsasalita mag-isa..:D "
I agree with you and Ecks. You will improve Nihongo just by memorizing five words per day and then try to use them in a sentence.
I find childrensprogramms also very useful. They are funny and they are easier to comprehend! They often repeat phrases.

Kailangan tlaga effort kung gusto tlaga nating matuto. Dito sa place na tinitirhan ko since province kasi mga matatanda kasama ko,di ko maintindihan mga sinasabi nila minsan malalim. Mga fukai no kotoba ikanga-malalim:) ginagawa ko basa na lang ako japanese dictionary. Self-study pag may mga words ka ni narinig at di mo naintindihan kuha ka kagad dictionary or itanong mo sa mas nakakaalam.
