Learning Japanese Language Through Songs

One great way to learn the Japanese language is to listen to Japanese songs. Manually picking up (in contrast to just googling out) their lyrics is a good practice to improve our listening ability. It should not stop there, however, the next important task for us is to decipher them and make them meaningful for us. This way we can easily recall them. There is a big difference between reading Japanese books and trying to meaningfully memorize a song: we often have to force ourselves to read books while we usually listen to songs for entertainment, that is why meaningfully memorizing songs could be one of the most enjoyable ways to learn the Japanese language. What's more this will prepare us for our next Karaoke death match with our Japanese fellows. :D

Of course it goes without saying that the ones we should practice on should be the ones that are melodically appealing to us.

Below is a song a learned through this practice. The song was used in a Japanese television commercial a few years back by an insurance company. The commercial itself was quite simple: there was a slide show of pictures of mothers, fathers, parents and their children, some playing children, babies, grandmothers, grandfathers, and couples while the song 言葉にできない plays in the background. At the end, the commercial asked a simple question: 「一番大切な人は誰ですか？」
I think it is one of the most compelling commercials I've ever seen - I felt like buying the damn insurance plan.:D

Anyway, below is the song with a rough translation. I tried to make the translation as literal as possible so I used paretheses to separate my interpretation from the original meaning of the words. I think ignoring the parentheses would give you the word-for-word translation. I will not put a romaji translation for this because I think people who are interested will listen to the song and get the pronunciation by themselves. Rikaichan posted by reon and discussed in this thread (http://www.timog.com/forum/showthread.php?t=438 0) will also be useful.

I think the song is quite straightforward and easy to understand. What is so good about this song is its honesty. The arrangement is superb in that the song construction portrays the very meaning and feeling of the song. And the melody, its mystic combination of honesty, melancholy, courage and love will make you recall the time when you felt something burning inside you but just can't express them exactly the way you felt them. Years before, I read somewhere that this song is for his mother...

I agree. We can learn Japanese thru songs. In fact, kids from Youchien always learn new songs almost every week. Makes learning fun and easier. Excuse me for comparing us with toddlers. My point is, for beginners, this may be effective.;)

actually, it's easy to remember anything with melody, or patterns for that matter. didn't you guys notice that we can easily memorize songs as compare to remembering class lectures (e.g., nipongo class). psychologists say it's because our brain loves patterns which are present in songs, e.g., rhythm, melody.

i remember when i was reviewing for my board exam, our instructors told us that the best way for us to remember the concepts that we need to understand all the rest of the principles is to put melody into those concepts. & the review center did it for us. true enough! it was way easy that simply memorizing the concepts which was brain-aching!

so same with learning nipongo, listening to nipongo songs will definitely help!

i agree. :) learning through songs makes it so much easier and more interesting to learn japanese. kasi pag puro na lang yung structured lessons na tipong old school masyado, nakaka-bore lalo na sa mga mas batang learners.

i used to have a classmate in japanese class. lahat ng alam nyang japanese songs ay yung naririnig nya lang sa anime. but it's very effective for her and really helped improve her listening skills. :)

This video is more than what I was hoping for. Before I wrote this thread I was thinking that it will be difficult for those who don't know the song to relate with it. Since I can't give out the song itself to those who are interested in hearing it, the only solution that I thought of was to write the translation and describe why I like it so much. This movie file did more than what I originally wanted to do, it not only made the song available to those interested, it even let people see Oda, his emotional expressions, and his viewers reactions while he is singing the song.
This is the first time I saw this video, not to mention Oda Kazumasa singing!

Now going back to the topic, is there anyone out there who liked a particular Japanese song so much that they really did their homework just to memorize and be able to sing the song? Thanks again for the information Firipinjin. I saw the videos and slide show at the sites using Windows Media Player and Flash with my Powerbook G4. Hmm, maybe you just need to download the WMP and the Flash plug-in. And yes, maybe the commercial that I saw was the one that you mentioned. Then again maybe a combination of all of them.

In the videos at the website the question posed at the end of the the commercial was actually「あなたの守りたい人は、 誰ですか?」and not the one I wrote below. That was an error on my part, sorry. :)

However, I discourage writing in romaji here because it defeats the purpose of studying the Japanese language - especially Kanjis. I can see that it helps, but isn't it enough for people to listen to the song and have the real Japanese characters. If people really like the song they would "hear" the pronunciation themselves. And as I wrote in the beginning of this thread people who are really interested in learning Japanese through songs would make use of the Rikaichan posted by reon to help them in decrypting the Japanese characters.

And lastly please edit your post and delete the link for the MP3 file because it's illegal, and TF is specifically against such posts - except if you are completely sure that it is legal to download the song.

Hindi ko rin memorized yung iba dyan, lagi pa rin akong nagbabasa ng caption.
Pero natuto akong magbasa ng mabilis...pero nakatingin pa rin sa screen.

This one is quite a simple song, but I like it very much. Very straightforward and honest. The song is さよなら大好きな人 by 花＊花. It was a hit when I was still in Osaka five years ago, but maybe even before that. Last Spring, I was watching this Drama entitled Oyaji, and the song was its main soundtrack. I watch drama sometimes because it helps with my Japanese, but sometimes I get hooked, he he he :D

Anyway, Hana Hana's song portrays the real bitter sweet feeling of goodbyes. Sometimes people part ways for some reason that we can never really fully understand, much less take control. Partings with the one that we love is always bitter - there's no question about that - but sometimes even two persons who truly love each other just can't stay together for some mysterious forces in life. It is in this very situation that even at partings we try not dwell on negative things and instead see through the darkness the light that is always there. Love in this case dominates even over the combined feeling of lost, bitterness, and devastation. Hana Hana evoked all those emotions in this song. I may be wrong, but the Japanese people seems to appreciate this conviction better than the Filipinos.

Again, I tried to look for the song but could't find a good one. The only one that I saw that is complete and clear is a remake by 松浦 彩 (Matsuura Aya). Aya is a lovely young singer but I guess Hana Hana's version (original) is better. The video that I found at youtube has an english transcription of the song that would suffice to everyone, the video itself is some scenes in Final Fantasy. I wanted to make a youtube slideshow movie, dub it with Hana Hana's song, and upload it to youtube so that you guys could listen to the real thing, but I just don't have so much pictures. Hmnn, I'll think about it... Anyway, here's the song by the energetic Ayaya.:D

Corrections: the video translated 「何もかも捨てきれない 」as "Nothing is beautiful anymore". That's a small error, the author may have heard it as 「何もかも素敵ない」wher e 素敵 (すてき) means beautiful. The better translation however is "Maybe I never can throw this all away..." The rest of the translation is fine, but some could be translated in better ways. Anyway, the Japanese here is very simple and straightforward so I hope you guys don't think about the English translation anymore, just think in Japanese mode.;)

One of the most beautiful Japanese songs I've ever heard. Sometimes, we can't choose the one we love, it just happens, and this fact makes this song a beautiful masterpiece. Yamazaki Masayoshi is a very talented song writer. He has a very distinct vocals that you'd either hate or love at first, but would mostly like eventually. He is actually a bluesman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXxfdE6OTdw&mode=related&search=), although he also sings pop music and write songs for pop musicians like SMAP. He sometimes act too, and he's not bad at it. He is one of my favorite Japanese musicians.

Anyway, there's a lot of tricky Japanese words, both visible and omitted, in this song. I translated the song according to what I think it means. The video has lyrics subtitle so be sure to see and check them yourselves. If you guys enjoy the music, it might make you remember the lyrics too. It was a difficult translation, if some of you guys could suggest better or alternative wordings, please do so, by all means. ako naman po when i was still preggy mahilig kami ng mahal ko na magpunta sa karaoke bar,mahilig po kasi kumanta ang hubby ko..utang ko rin po sa karaoke bar na natuto akong bumasa ng hiragana,katakana,at kanji....sa ngayon po nakakapagtext nako ng kanji pero konti pa lang po ang alam kong i-handwrite...
