A Dell laptop suddenly exploded into flames in a conference held here in Japan (Osaka) in front of several attendees.
"The d**n thing was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes"..."For the record, this is a Dell machine, It is only a matter of time until such an incident breaks out on a plane"
Imagine using a laptop like that one on your lap. Aray !! :D

I won't be surprised if airport authorities suddenly bans DELL laptops citing the probability of an explosion while in flight.
I still think that is an isolated incident. But thank God I didn't buy a dell. I hope my Mac doesn't do the same.

Dell Inspiron 8200. :(
di sya kasama..pero careful din. mostly prob kasi sa DELL yung fan. they insist that it's not a laptop...it's a portable daw kaya you shouldn't use it and put it on your lap cuz it gets hot. haha kabisado ko pa rin yung mga pang BS nila.

Thanks for the heads up.
But I doubt I'd be getting another Dell in the future. Not after seeing that piece of crap detonate.
With regards to laptops, any good suggestion on what's a good brand to buy, besides Panasonic?

It's not the computer, it's the batteries that heat up, explode and catch fire. So it could happen to any laptop brand.
Remember how alkaline batteries leaked and damaged internal components of cameras and other electronics when rechargeable batteries were not available yet? Well now it's the Lithium-ion batteries. But instead of leaking acid, they explode or catch fire. The main reason for this is because they are packing more and more energy in smaller packages. Lots of energy in such a small space means large amounts of heat. And large amounts of trapped heat plus inflammable material = fire.
One way of avoiding this is to raise the bottom of your laptop when using it for long periods of time since most batteries are positioned in the bottom of the laptop. This would give the laptop 'breathing space' and let the heat escape. There are a lot of products that address this problem. Some are simple laptop stands while others have cooling fans. I've been using my Powerbook for the past three years running 24/7 and it hasn't caught fire yet. It does run hot sometimes but not for long since I have it on an aluminum laptop stand with two cooling fans. I just turn on the fans when it gets too hot (when the internal fan kicks in and starts running on high speed for quite some time).
Also, be sure to check your laptop vendor's website from time to time because that's where they post important product safety announcements and product recalls.

Kapag nilagay mo sa lap mo at tinamaan ng shrapnel si 'junior' mo, no amount of money will ever buy you the happiness that your 'junior' provides. :)

it could happen to any laptop, not just DELL. lithium ion batteries can cause explosion DAW pag naexpose sa air yung components sa loob.

some models of DELL like inspiron 1100 (a.k.a. lemon hundred) and 5100 have overheating issues. medyo may prob din kasi sa pagkakadesign ng portable fan.

When plugged to an outlet (and after my batteries have been charged full), I have the habit of removing the battery from my macbook just like what they do at Bicamera (for the display units). Unless I am in a remote location, my fully charged batteries are detached from the main unit.

Kahit yung 5 year old ko, kayang kaya manipulate yung touch pad.
Factory defect madalas iyan ;)

NEC still receives a lot of flak because some of its computers overheated, burst into flames and melted several years ago. The cause was identified as a battery problem that was later fixed, but the bad reputation still remains today. I dont use Macs, but I think it could happen to any laptop.

That's a very good idea that everyone should practice. It also helps lengthen the effective use-life of your battery. BTW, it's standard practice at our company now... and we only attach the batteries to our laptops when we are either recharging them or when we are using the laptops during transit.

Got this in one of my feeds today.
MacBook Pro bites Man... allegedly (http://go.theregister.com/feed/http://www.reghardware.co.u k/2006/10/17/man_alleges_macbook_ pro_injury/)
I guess this is a case of milking the cow. Seems like some consumers can't wait until their battery explodes in order to get compensation.
I am still saving and looking forward to getting our first Mac, a Macbook (13"). Any negative news so far?
