Mobile Number Portability (MNP) (携帯電話の番号ポータビリティ : keitai denwa no bangou portability)
To summarize:
Transfer fee from one phone company: \2,100
Transfer fee to another: \0
Administrative fee for contract processing:
- NTT Docomo (http://www.nttdocomo.com/pr/2006/001286.html): \3,150 incl. tax
- KDDI & Okinawa Cellular (http://www.kddi.com/english/corporate/news_release/2006/0809a/index.html): ¥2,835 incl. tax
- Vodafone/Softbank (http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/important/mnp/): ¥2,835 incl. tax
Ito ang sabi sa Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (総務省: Soumu-shou). Sorry wala akong makitang English version.

Matagal ko nang hinihintay ito. :) 1-dekada na din ang number ko kaya napamahal na din sakin. Kahit may bayad at least may choice na tayong lumipat na hindi mapapalitan ang number. :)

I'd like to give this thread another "bump" as Mobile Number Portability (MNP) begins today, October 24.
Number portability means options for users, headaches for carriers (http://search.japantimes.co .jp/cgi-bin/nn20061024a3.html)
The complete story can be found at the above link. Here are some excerpts:
While number retention may be good news for users, carriers face tough competition, heavy sales promotions and ad campaigns that eat into their profits. "The (number portability) system is also aimed at facilitating competition among carriers so subscribers can get better services," Uematsu said. "Since customers will likely switch carriers if there are more attractive services and handsets in other companies, mobile phone operators need to make efforts" to ensure their subscribers remain satisfied, said Nishimura of Daiwa Institute of Research. "It will bring on extra costs and eat into their profits."Saa...obserbahan natin ang pagbaba ng cell phone bills natin. ;)
Guys, this might not be very related and you might know this thing already, but Softbank just said that they're going to make calls and email messages free for some or all of their phones after paying a monthly charge of around 3,000 yen!
This number portability thing is one of the best news in Japan for a long time now.
I must admit, i'm very tempted to change my carrier from AU to SoftBank. :D

I must admit, i'm very tempted to change my carrier from AU to SoftBank. :DI am tempted too. Ang gusto ko lang malaman ay kung:
Malakas na ba ang signal ng Softbank phones?
Kasi yung mga kilala kong gumagamit ng dating Vodafone madalas walang signal - kahit sa gitna na ng Tokyo. Kung maimprove na ito, I will change to Softbank (from au also).

p.s.
dcat I think I have to move our posts into thermometer's thread. Mas bagay yata dun.
no problemo, senor. :)
