Masako and her husband, Crown Prince Naruhito, have a two-year-daughter, Aiko.
Japan's constitution permits only sons to inherit the throne, the world's oldest unbroken hereditary monarchy. The emperor is considered a symbol of Japanese culture and a Shinto deity, a religion that has no female priests.

Princess Akishino(kiko), wife of the "spare" Prince Akishino (Fumihito),is currently pregnant with their third child. Hoping that they may have a son, this may conclude the dilemma on the heir and successor of the throne.

I feel symphaty for Masako-sama, not being able to poduce a son. And the pressure on the whole Imperial family, that even the 40 years old Princess Kiko, was forced? to conceive a child because they might have given up hope on the crown princess. The Congress has no choice but to allow an Empress,(Aiko-sama) to rule the Family if the worst happens.:(

Well, this is a very sensitive subject.
One must be careful to whom you speak about this matter.

Some Japanese still have an almost religious belief that the Emperor is a God, or someone of quite super-human existence.
Somehow, the idea of an Empress is quite unthinkable to them.

Dr. Kumiko Takeuchi, a famous science writer, explained this by X-chromosome theory.
(By adopting an Empress, the X-chromosome of Emperor Jinmu (The first emperor) cannot be copied to next generation.)

But this scientific explanation is quite unpopular for them, although Dr. Kumiko Takeuchi is on the same side. (opposing an Empress.)

I will take your advice and be careful on discussing about this very sensitive topic. However, the world is already talking about the Imperial Household of Japan for quite sometime now. There's a book published in France entitled "Prinzessin Masako, Der Gefangene Schmetterling (the captive butterfly)".Somehow, Masako-sama had gained popularity and symphaty of other nations (other than Japan), because they don't understand very well the Japanese culture and tradition. Having an Empress instead of an Emperor will break the tradition and might kill the culture. If that happens, there may be no point of preserving the monarchy as well, since it is the symbol of the culture itself (a dying culture).
It shouldn't be that way.....

A prince is born
The dearth of male heirs to the throne led to often-heated debate about revising the Imperial House Law........The birth of the boy should end that debate.

Well, atleast Aiko sama will be living a normal life. What is in being an Emperor or an Empress when one does not really enjoy a normal way of living (just my opinion). I mean every step or move they make seem to be calculated or dictated.

hindi pa naman yata sigurado yan.....pwedeng si princess aiko pa din ang magmana ng throne. kung mapapalitan ang law nila bago pa siya makapag asawa ng commoner.

As of now, the Female-emperor debate on the Congress is closed.

Even if the government revise the Imperial House Law, and allows Aiko-sama to rule the Royal Family, another issue will surface, regarding her successor. When she marries a male-commoner.
