Hi Smiling Face! :)
MIDI is an abbreviation for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a communication method in digital codes that will enable musical instruments and computers to communicate with each other to produce sound. An example is an electronic keyboard. Where do you think the sound comes from when you hit a key on an electronic piano? It doesn't have strings to vibrate sounds.
Therefore electronic keyboards need to simulate sounds using digital codes, just like computer softwares and applications. Now, there are now many simulation codes being used by a electronic devices such as electronic keyboards to produce almost everykind of sounds. Now, our electronic pianos not only can simulate piano sounds, they could simulate drums, guitars, bass, horns, synthesizers - you name it they could simulate it.
To take advantage of this revolution in sound, people thought of a way for music instruments such as electronic keyboards and computers to understand each other. And this gave birth to MIDI. Now, you could connect an electronic piano to your computer through USB or Firewire cables, and produce (or simulate) virtually thousands of different sounds of different musical instruments - guitars, grand piano, horns, basses, anything. Of course, it depends on the software that you are using which kind of sounds are possible. But the heart of communication is MIDI.
I don't know if Windows XP support MIDI out of the box, but for Apple computers MIDI is built-in at the core of Mac OS X so when I plug a musical instrument to my Mac, the computer automaticallly detects the instrument and could produce sound immediately.
Hope that helps.
By the way, I sometimes compose music through MIDI using guitars, keyboards, synthesizers, and my Powerbook. ;)

Hello Dcat :
I wanna explain regarding the midi you have discuss above . Nice ! it's a good explaination . But in my case I am collecting a Midi Songs from the internet or the one I bought from the internet then I started to make some new editions . Cuz usually the midi files in the internet specially if it is offered as free downloads are really terrible . You have to arrange it specially if there is one instrument which is not balanced . I know you know all this things .
Regarding for the Windows XP ?
I am using Windows XP since when I started to modify some midi songs . But before I am using the CAKEWALK version 5.0 which could not be found anymore today because it is only compatible for Windows 98 and 2000. Now there is a software that can play or edit midi files for those who are still using the windows xp which is could SONAR & CUBASE . But for those people who doesn't want to spend money for the midi software , I can recommend a midi karaoke player which called VanBasco Karaoke Player which you can download for free : If you want to use Midi files just for fun I think VanBasco is better because if you're Midi has a lyrics inserted then it will appear in the screen same as Karaoke .
But for those people wanna have a perfect sound , then I think midi software is not enough. You have to spend a little amount for the Sound Modules inorder to have a great sounds . I think MIDI is more better compare to the regular karaoke that we usually have in our home . What do you think Dcat am I right ?

I'm perfectly ok with sharing non-commercial music files such as MIDI. I'm even for sharing all kinds of music were it not only illegal. I see TF as a bastion of new thinking for Filipinos that would instill in them the good points of the Japanese people regarding strict adherence to rules and regulations. That is why TF should not be involved in any illegal activities in the net. For legitimate file-sharing, however, i don't see how it would hurt.
Anyway, there are lots of sites out there that shares non-commercial music files for everyone to manipulate and enjoy. I even have thousands and thousands of them on my Mac. When you buy a mac, it comes with a music software called Garageband for free, and it has lots of MIDI files that you could manipulate - it's very easy to create your own songs - even if your knowledge of music instruments is limited. And you can add to your inventory of MIDI files from the net.
Please share with us the links and the MIDI files that you have, i'm sure someone here interested in raw music files will be pleased. :)

but for commercial Midi I will recommend , http://www.midiland.de/index_en.htm
Mac is very interesting gossip nowadays for the musicians because it's not quite difficult as what my friend told me , especially if you are using PRO LOGIC .Professional Musicians are using PRO LOGIC for Recording in the Studio . I only learned by my friend who has a recording studio here in Japan .
Share mo naman sa akin ... some other links for commercial midi sites .
Thank's in Advance :guitar:
