I knew the vulgar and emphatic expressions of “datte”, “datte yo”, “datte ba”, but I haven’t heard the expression “datte ba yo”
I searched the net and found that this expression is famous nowadays because a popular cartoon hero Uzumaki-naruto frequently used this expression. (The title of the cartoon is Naruto-naruto and is in Shonen Jump.)
It is Uzumaki-naruto’s new expression, though it is easy to guess the meaning by the above mentioned more common expressions.
In my understanding there is a certain degree of difference in the 3 expressions.
All of them are vulgar and too colloquial.
No Japanese around me speaks to me using these expressions.
However, among themselves I notice they speak these words.
“Datte” is feminine or childish
“Datte ba” is feminine or childish and more emphatic than “datte”
“Datte yo” is masculine and vulgar or menacing.
According to the net, the Vis.com version of English translation just avoided translating this.
Functionally it is the same as “desu.”
Conclusion:
I think “Datte ba yo” is stronger than datte, datte yo, datte ba, thus is something like multiple exclamation marks. !!!!!!
