View Full Version : Foreigners looking like fools with gobbledygook tattoos
japantimesKoi itai (love hurts). Sekira (stark naked). Kuso (s**t). Are these the sort of expressions you'd want permanently etched into a visible portion of your epidermis? Probably not. But as San Francisco-based columnist Tomohiro Machiyama writes in Cyzo, growing numbers of Americans are arranging to have kanji (Sino-Japanese ideographs) tattooed on their bodies, with results that range from the incomprehensible to the hilarious. Tattoo's can look very cool... The fact that some people just get a tattoo, for no reason and then regretting it later.. I wonder how would it look like when your 90 old and wrinkled.. lol..:p

The K-1 perpetual loser Akebono, a former sumo champion, has a tattoo on his arm saying “YOKOZUNA”
I don’t like that tattoo, for I feel like it is disgracing the authority of the title and history of sumo.
Maybe he intentionally did it in alphabet, rather than kanji, on the pretext 横綱 and Yokozuna was different.
(Medyo OT po.....)
In fact, if you want to input it (at least by IME), Yokozuna becomes 横砂、a non-existent word, and Yokoduna must be input to display 横綱.
Because the initial pronunciation of 綱 is tsuna, not suna, it must be like that.
Since current pronunciation of づ is zu, the ordinary spelling in English is Yokozuna.
For that sense, Akebono is not wrong.
The disappearance of the sound du (as in do in English) can be attributed to the adoption of “dental t and d” by recent Japanese, rather than “alveolar t and d” the original Korean or Chinese conquerors used. (This ended by 3 AD, a theory most Korean and Japanese refuse to accept. I have studied both Korean and Japanese and amazed at the similarity of the grammar and a lot of similar sounding words, though the number of vowels is 8 in Korean. However, numerous documents record the use of 8 vowels in ancient Japanese literature, such as Man-yo-shu. This can be explained by mother-child language learning. Inter-marriage, (perhaps abduction and rape included) had taken place between the conquers and native widows and women. Since most current Japanese can say du, they are not physically incapable of saying that sound. They just got deprived of practicing that sound.

Britney's Tramp Stamp?
I'm thinking about getting those Confucian proverbs tattoo either in Hanzi or Kanji.
How do you write in Kanji; "Sleep with itchy @ss, wake up with smelly finger?"

Raiden,
One of my white buddies have several "funky" kanji tattoos on his left leg and butt. I asked him to show his tattoos to my wife and my mother inlaw and they nearly died of laughing. First he planned to get his tattoos earased but he also learned that his funky tattoos are his "free ticket" to get J-chics. I've seen him flashing his funky tattoos to every nice J-chic he meets and he really does get lucky.
Maybe its time for me to get a really funky kanji tattoo on my forehead just to get the scores even :D
