View Full Version : Studying in Japan
Tatlo lang siguro ang pinaka main idea ng thread na to: possibilities, means, and life as a (Filipino) foreign students in Japan.

Nice thread Dcat san !

2007 Japanese Government Scholarships (http://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/scholarship/monbusho.html)
" - FAQs (http://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/scholarship/faq.htm)
Halimbawa ang teacher training course ay para sa 18 to 29 years old, ang research under 35 years old, ang college of technology, undergrad at professional training naman ay 17 to 21 years old.

For extra information please see Mod. Dax's link (http://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/scholarship/monbusho.html) and the previous link (http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0302e.html).
p.s. further information will be provided on a need to know basis. :D

Hullo ayumi! :)
Thank you for your interest and your concern for your nieces. The quick answer to your question is yes, they could take the Monbukagakusho Scholarship examinations. There are many types of scholarships as I've said in my previous posts, but the most appropriate for your nieces will be (1) undergraduate students, (2) College of technology students, (3) Professional traning college students, (4) Japanese studies students (most usually for students who have some Japanese language ability).
The most important qualification, as I remember it, were that students must have at least finished 12 years of schooling (elementary + highschool + 2 years of college), and that they must be no older than 21 years of age before arriving in Japan. I'm assuming your nieces are still continuing their studies so it would not be a problem.
Of course they must be healthy too. And it goes without saying that they have to pass or do very well in their examinations (written tests and interviews). The kind of examinations that will be given will be determined by the kind of scholarship and course the student wants to take up in Japan. So your nieces should make up her mind as soon as possible on they want to study in Japan, prepare the other requirements, and prepare for the examinations.
I don't know what is above average intelligence. I just know that most people have normal intelligence, and only the very few are the genuises (maybe like Einstein and John Nash). I guess what I'm saying is that we are all the same - we are just differentiated by degree of our persistence and the nature of our hard work.
Anyway, if they get accepted or get awarded the Monbukagakosho Scholarship, the Japanese government will pay for your nieces's plane ticket back and forth. The government will send them to colleges or universities free of charge. And they will be given monthly scholarship of around 135,000 Yen, until they finish their scholarship program (usually 3 to 5 years).
For some kinds of scholarship, the Japanese government lets scholars decide where to study. For example me, I chose Osaka for my undergraduate, and then later on I thought it's about time to go to Tokyo, so I'm now pursuing my masters degree here in Tokyo. Of course students must past the entrance examinations of these colleges to be admitted. However, for some types of scholarships the place and the university or college are predetermined by the scholarship committee, so students should be prepared if they get sent to Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, etc. But of course during their first year, the place where they will be sent to study Japanese language will be decided by the committee. Please understand that there are possibilities that students be sent to Kyushu, Wakayama, Hiroshima, Totori, Gifu, Aomori, Hokkaido, etc. Scholars does not have so much control over these decisions.
Since these scholars receive full allowances that are more than enough for their everyday studying life in Japan, the Japanese government discourage this working and part-time jobs for Monbukagakusho scholars. Of course they want these students to focus on their studies, which they pledged to do. However, if they really must work, they could and should apply for "Permit To Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted." It is easy to get this permit, so most scholars have some kind of part time jobs or another. Some forget their studies though, because of working.
I will see if I could write ten steps of how the scholarship procedure goes by around tomorrow. Anyway, the initial most important step is to pay a visit to the Japanese Embassy in Manila, or the Japanese Consulates other parts of the Philippines. There, students could get valuable informations, and it will give you a hint if they are really interested or not...;)
*who are qualified for mombukagakusho scholarship?
*are average-level intelligence qualified?
('coz my perception of scholar is above- average intelligence)May sample exams sa website (eto ang link (http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/koutou/ryugaku/05110801/001.htm)) para sa magte-take ng undergrad, research, college of technology at special training.
*is first year college qualified?(less than 12 years of formal education)Kung 1st year college ang pamangkin mo, next year (around January 2008) bago pa matapos ang school year na ito ay pwede na siyang mag-apply. Kung mapili siya, around April 2009 pa siya ipapadala dito sa Japan so by that time naka-12 years na siyang nag-aaral ng formal education. :)
*who will pay the school fees? Not to worry because they will be receiving more than enough. :)
*is there a monthly allowances?(transpor tation allowance..etc.etc.. )Nasagot na din ni dcat.
*at what part of Japan these schools are located?Sa unang taon mag-aaral ang scholars ng undergrad, college of technology at special training ng Nihongo (at iba pang subject including but not limited to English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology etc.) sa Tokyo o Osaka.
MEXT, in consultation with the university concerned and the preparatory school, will decide on the university to which a grantee should apply for admission. In this decision, the following will be taken into consideration: results of the academic examination at the preliminary selection held in his/her home country, academic attainments at the preparatory school, proposed major subject, and capacity of the university, etc. No objection is allowed regarding the university placement. (LINK (http://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/scholarship/undergrad.htm))
In other words may konting control ang undergrad students kung saang parte ng Japan sila mapupunta depende sa mga kundisyon sa itaas, pero ang last say ay nasa MEXT (Monbukagakusho) pa din. Para naman sa college of technology:
A grantee who has completed the prescribed course at the preparatory school will go on to a college of technology designated by MEXT. Placement of grantees to a college of technology will be made by MEXT after consultation with the college concerned. No objection by the grantee is allowed regarding college placement. (LINK (http://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/scholarship/technology.htm))
Para sa mga special training:
A grantee who has completed the prescribed course at the preparatory school will go on to a professional training college designated by MEXT. Placement of grantees at a professional training college will be made by MEXT after consultation with the school concerned. No objection by the grantee is allowed regarding college placement. LINK (http://www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp/scholarship/senshu.htm))
The "preparatory school" above means Nihongo course school.
*are these scholars allowed to work part time/to have a job?No they aren't...as dcat has mentioned. Kung di talaga makatiis, kumuha muna ng permit.
*can you give us first ten steps to do in applying for mombusho scholarship?Tama si dcat - mag-inquire muna directly sa embassy. Other than that, importante na magkaroon ng sipag at tyaga, hindi lang sa pag-aaral pati na sa pag-apply lalo na kung malayo sa Manila ang applicant. Noong panahon ko pumupunta pa ako sa PLDT sa probinsya namin para tumawag ng long distance sa embassy.:D Maraming documents na kailangan i-submit katulad ng transcript of records (mula elementary), medical certificate (incl. x-ray, stool test, urine test results), recommendation letter galing sa dean or higher college official (not sure kung kailangan pa - please check sa embassy), atbp. Ang iba sa application pa lang give-up na...

@DCAT & MOD DAX san,
or puede ba silang i-convert from student visa to working visa

Dear ayumi,
Working after graduation is very possible especially when they already acquired high proficiency in Japanese language. The key to working in Japan is having the ability to communicate effectively with the Japanese people.
There are many foreign students who immediately join the Japanese workforce after their graduation. Prospective foreign students need not worry about that now. They should worry about passing the examinations first. After passing the exams, the sky is the limit...;)

share ko lang din-
may isa pang scholarship grant na pwedeng aplayan tayong mga pinoy na civil servants or even those working for private companies (though limited ang slot)
para makapag-aral dito sa Japan
it's called the
Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) Program
as the title suggests, it's a grant by the Japanese Govt to the Phil govt to help train the latter's civil servants
and it's administered by NEDA
ino-offer din ito sa citizens ng ibang developing countries here in Asia
for those interested, all the information you need to know is at this site: http://sv2.jice.org/jds/jds/index.html

Kasama na doon yung 1 year Japanese language studies.

Tapos ipapadala pa daw sa MEXT (?) yung application for another screening.
Any tips for the screening process sa mga nagbabakasakaling magaral sa Japan?
Haha ^___^
@Meganekodomo kun,
You don't have to answer these here, ang mahalaga ay alam mo ang gusto mong gawin sa buhay mo. Sana makatulong ito para mai-guide ka. :)
1. Why Japan?
Why not U.S. or Europe?
2. How much do you know about Japan?
Japan is no fairy tale country where everyone is friendly, the chicks pretty (well marami din nyan siempre ;)), and the food delicious (depende na din sa tao). Just read the stories of our ka-TF in Timog Living (http://www.timog.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5 7) and Timog Community (http://www.timog.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4 ).
3. Why Professional Training?
Dahil madali lang ang test? If that is the only reason baka magsisi ka, kaya isipin mong mabuti ang consequences. I took the College of Technology because the Undergraduate program had a chemistry test. :p
4. What course do you plan to take?
Kasi kung hindi eh back to question 1.
5. What do you plan to do after finishing the scholarship?
Dito ka ba titira? Uuwi ka ba? Magma-migrate sa iba pang bansa? Akala ko noon after 4 years uuwi na ako sa Pinas...pero eto ngayon halos 13 years na nandito pa ako. :D
The questions above are for everyone planning to study here. Sana ay huwag mong mamasamain. I'm just trying to help. Ja gambatte ne! :)

1. Why Japan?
It is something I have planned long before I've known about the scholarship. Not because of the positive side, but I liked Japan as a WHOLE. Plus, I have relatives there~ =P
2. How much do you know about Japan?
I've been watching Japan documentaries and a Japanese channel that has a Filipina going around the country showing tourists spots and other unknown places people should come and visit. And having relatives there, I'm connected at least in a little way. Much so that I know the latest happenings, but not too much that I have willed myself to discover others by going there.
3. Why Professional Training?
I'm born September 13, 1986 so that makes me 21 by April 2008. That means this will be my last chance if I were to take a scholarship other than the masteral/research/teachers which has a higher age limit. Also, the courses offered are those which I would willingly choose.
4. What course do you plan to take?
I have selected Design as my top choice. I've been known by my friends as the 'creative artist' because of the graphical designs and computer arts I've been making ever since high school.
5. What do you plan to do after finishing the scholarship?
I've read in the scholarship that outstanding academic records would be a sufficient requirement for students looking for an extension of their scholarships. And I've read of personal accounts of scholars in Japan extending their stay because of studying... So why pass up the chance?
Nevertheless, I will still study hard, tsaka nothing hurts in trying, ne?
@Meganekodomo
Thanks for the reply. I wasn't really expecting an answer, I just wanted you to read those questions and think.
1. Why Japan?
It is something I have planned long before I've known about the scholarship. Not because of the positive side, but I liked Japan as a WHOLE. Plus, I have relatives there~ =PHaving relatives certainly is a plus. But keep in mind that you like Japan now that you haven't lived here yet. That feeling can and will change once you start feeling lonely, once you don't feel you belong here, once you realize that your language skill isn't good enough (Nihongo is more difficult than you think it is, trust me), and all other inconveniences and hassles of everyday life as a foreigner.
I'm sorry for sounding negative. I am just telling you the truth. Japan is no fairy tale country. Like everywhere else, it has a bad side. Be prepared to feel lonely, to feel different and unwanted, to be misunderstood and to not understand, to feel that you want to go home, to get no gravy in your KFC. :p Nobody told me these things before I came. I am telling you now. :)
That is good. At least you'll have a clue to what you are going to experience.
3. Why Professional Training?
I'm born September 13, 1986 so that makes me 21 by April 2008. That means this will be my last chance if I were to take a scholarship other than the masteral/research/teachers which has a higher age limit. Also, the courses offered are those which I would willingly choose.I see. But if I were you, I would take the Research exam. Anyway, that is your choice.
4. What course do you plan to take?
I have selected Design as my top choice. I've been known by my friends as the 'creative artist' because of the graphical designs and computer arts I've been making ever since high school. If you are considering Animation, ask the experts here for advice.
5. What do you plan to do after finishing the scholarship?
I've read in the scholarship that outstanding academic records would be a sufficient requirement for students looking for an extension of their scholarships. And I've read of personal accounts of scholars in Japan extending their stay because of studying... So why pass up the chance?
Nevertheless, I will still study hard, tsaka nothing hurts in trying, ne?Pwede ka din mag-Masters after finishing Professional Training in three years time. But if you pass the Research exam, you could do the same in just one (or maybe two) year/s.
Good luck kid. Natutuwa ako sa mga posts mo. Just exert that extra effort and leave the rest to fate.

Lagi niya akong nak-kuwentohan ng mga activities and things which makes Japan unique from other countries. Kaya kahit papaano alam ko both the negative and positive points about Japan (although hindi lahat).
Even my mom is kinda hesitant sa pagpapadala sakin sa Japan, nagaalala siya na baka hindi daw ako 'hiyang' doon. I know na talagang mahihirapanako, lalo na't this will be my first time out of the country~
And kaya hindi ko pinili ang Research kasi I heard na talagang mahirap daw yun, even if the rewards is high. Haha~

Hullo esp_pina!:)

I'm very sorry, I didn't see this one. Please don't give up yet if you are still eligible. You must understand that there are many factors that could determine successful applicants. Filipino applicants do not know how many students will be awarded the scholarship in a given year. The number - i guess - fluctuates first according to the Japanese government budget, and then on the level of competitiveness of our applicants compared to that of other countries. I must admit that on the competitiveness level, students from other Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand outperform Filipino students in the subjects of natural sciences.
Don't get me wrong, Filipino students are sufficiently talented and they have the same potentials with other students anywhere in the globe, but it is well documented that Filipino students are not getting the same intensive training in the sciences as their South East Asian counterparts do and are therefore being outperformed in competitive competitions such as the prestigious Japanese Government Scholarship. When I was in Osaka, I saw constant number of newly awarded South East Asian undergraduate scholars for a period of five years: they were roughly around seven Indonesians, five Thais, fifteen Vietnamese, five Malaysians, and maybe six to seven Singaporeans students. Filipino scholars, one or two. More than half of those scholars from other countries are in the category of natural sciences. Interestingly, in those five years that I've been in Osaka there were no Filipino undergraduate students taking science course, all were social science students.
That alone is a good hint of our level of competitiveness when it comes to the sciences. The problem is severe, and somehow the education system in the Philippines must change to address this intensifying quagmire. But while we wait for that to happen, we, Filipino students must recognize that problem in the education system and push ourselves more. More means we need to push ourselves in a level where we could say with confidence, "no one could ever done it better than I did." Honestly, I'm sorry to say that answering fifty to sixty percent of the exam questions is not good enough. Filipinos must try to target answering 100% of the questions correctly. I know it must be very hard - harder than those taking social sciences - but that is the only way.
One more thing, when I myself was taking the exam most of the students already left the examination room 40 minutes before the very end, and by the last 30 minutes I was the only one left. I asked the proctor if I was mistaken with the time or if my watch was broken and she said it was right and that I should take my time. I used those last 30 minutes to reread the questions and double check my answers. I didn't leave the room until the very last minute. I know, students have different styles in taking exams, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to check and recheck your answers if there is still time left.
Yuki, please take the exams again if you can and if you are still qualified. You took it already and you must use that experience to your advantage and do better the second time around. I hope and I pray for all you students out there to do your best - truly and honestly the BEST YOU CAN DO - and come here and join us. We are all waiting for you here. Minasan, gambatte ne. :)
P.S. Being a genius is definitely not a requirement in these exams.;)

Anyway, I'll try again next time. That would be the last time I will sit for the undergraduate stuff (because I will surpass the age limit of 21 soon) , I know it would be tough but still ill pursue it. Hayyy naku... I think Megane-san had the same fate with me during the last exam, nakakalungkot talaga, balita ko 3 ung umabot sa interview at hndi ko alam ung nakapasa sa interview.

And kaya hindi ko pinili ang Research kasi I heard na talagang mahirap daw yun, even if the rewards is high.
musta na? i hope you passed the the initial exams...sa professional training hehehe
kun malamang mapadpad ka dito sa Tokyo with this scholarship, i will tell you are so lucky than those of different programs of mext.

Unfortunately, for Monbukagakusho Scholarship in the Philippines only Filipino citizens are eligible to apply. Bakit nga ba sya nandyan sa Pilipinas nag-aaral?
At kailangan may 12 years of studying experience sya, in which newly high school graduates in the Philippines do not have (6 years of Elementary + 4 years of High School). So interested Filipino students must go to college first, and finish at least 2 more years of studies in college before going to Japan - that is, if they pass the examinations.

So advice saken nung sa engineering department nila mag aral muna as a RESEARCH STUDENT...
Itong option na ito lang ang maari kong gawin as what they've advised me..

Nakapagtake ka ba ng exam ulit this year?
It would be interesting to know kung naging effective ba plano mo...
In case negative iyong results, there are other ways...
(1) Undergrad - > Kung hindi ka pa graduate sa Pinas at nagiisip na umulit ulit from scratch na back to zero ka at dito na sa Japan magundergard
(2) Technical Scholarships -> Kung tapos ka na sa Pinas but still within the age limit and gusto mo lang mag specialize on the field na pinag-aralan mo na. Possible entrance to undergrad courses pwede rin after the technical school program kung gusto mo pang mag-aral ng undergrad.
........Either one of the above, would be possible for you. I would say kung may specialty ka na na pinag-aralan mo sa Pinas for 4-year undergard, the technical Scholarship might be better.

I've got some questions about the Monbugakusho scholarship, too. :)
Thanks po pala sa mga answers to the already-asked questions. Anyway, here are mine:
1. Does the applicant really need to have a working knowledge of the Japanese language before the actual application? I've read the questionnaire for the past exams for Japanese. I'm planning to take Bus. Adm. pala. So pano yun if yung applicant 0% ang Japanese language level? I thought all scholars will be taught naman the language in Japan.
2. The monthly allowance already includes the food right? But the dorm fees (if living in a JASSO-adm. dorm or in the dorms of the universities where the students are enrolled in) will be paid by the Japanese govt?
3. How tight is the competition for the slots? O_O
I'm currently in my first year of college. When the application for the 2009 MEXT Scholarship opens, a-apply kaagad ako. :)

Hullo Xeltran!:)
Welcome to Timog Forum. I want to give a detailed answer but I'm so sleepy already, so I'll just answer your question one by one. If you have further questions I'll be happy to answer them for you later.
1. No, you don't need to know how to speak or read and write Japanese language to be granted a Monbukagasho Scholarship. Although it would be a great advantage since your examiners will think that you are really interested in Japan and the Japanese culture.
2. Yes the monthly allowance for undergraduate scholars, approximately 135,000 Yen, will already suffice for your average monthly living expenses in Japan. It means that you will make that amount meet your monthly living expenses, including food, housing, phone bills, beers, everything!
In essence, you will incur all the cost of living, including your dormitory rent, regardless if the dormitory is run by JASSO or not. Your allowance will be more than enough for you to have a very comfortable living standard while you're at school.
3. Very tight. It's especially tight for undergraduate scholarship applicants, like you - maybe the tightest Japanese Government Scholarship there is.
You could apply if: you're healthy; less than 22 years old by the time you arrive in Japan (you must be still 21 years old when you first set foot in Japan as a scholar; you're presently studying in university level; and have finished or will be finishing at least 12 years of studying experience before they send you here, in the event that you get the scholarship.
paano na kung lagpas ako ng 21.... im already 24 years of age at unfortunately kulang na kulang ako sa pera kaya nagstop ako...... but that doesnt mean na hindi ako matalino..... pwede pa ba akong mag avail ng scholarship kapag lagpas na ako ng 21

Welcome to TF. The easiest way, i think, for you is to apply for as a research student. Unfortunately, you must finish your undergraduate degree before you can. I think I already posted somewhere here how to apply as a research student, but I'll post it again later anyway. Goodluck and don't loose hope.

First, permit me to answer in English, because i'm faster writing in it.
I've read some of your posts before, you seem to be a very nice and humble person and I would like to really help you, but I just didn't know how.
This time however, I can give you a good advice that can be very effective in your goal to be a student in Japan. The answer to your question is to apply for a Japanese Government Scholarship for Research Student. I've already written a detailed description about it before, but no one seems to be interested.:D Here it is. (http://www.timog.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105 52)
You have many advantages: you work for a non-gonvernmental organization, and that is a noble and respectable work, one that is definitely enriching; you have been to Japan already as a scholar and most probably have at least basic level of Japanese profieciency; you are a university degree holder.
I know a university here in Japan that may accept you as a research student: Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (http://www.tufs.ac.jp/index-e.html). Of course, there are many other universities that may allow you to do your research at their campuses, but you have to find them yourself.
How about you write a research proposal about NGO activities and other related topics? There are many professors in that university that might be interested in such researches. Remember the advice I wrote about how someone should write their research proposals. Inquire at the Japanese Embassy (Roxas Boulevard) about the scholarship details, do your very best to write your research proposal.
If you have any further inquiry, please don't hesitate to ask. I will try the best I can to answer them. Goodluck and goodnight. :)

Hello overhedge!
Newbie rin ako sa forums but I knmow some info about the Monbukagakusho scholarship (if that's what you are interested here).
Most of the basic FAQs are already answered in the pages of this thread so it will really help you. One thing's for sure though, since 14 ka pa lang, you need to complete at least 12 years of formal education. In my case, 6 years elementary and 4 years high school, now I'm in first college, so I will apply for the 2009 Monbusho undergraduate program. I hope I'm correct about what I posted though. :)

first of all welcome to Timog Forum overhedge! :)
it means you need to finish or you must be finishing at least 12 years of studies in the Philippines before you could apply for Monbukagakusho scholarship.
If however you want to come to Japan and continue with your high school studies, it's also possible but difficult since you still don't know so much Japanese to get you around the country, much less for you to cope up with your studies which will mostly be in Japanese language.
If you're interested with the Japanese government scholarship, you have an advantage, since you're starting up early, you'll be better prepared when you finally sit for the examinations. Don't loose your direction, and always remember your goal - Japan.
About your question on Japanese language schools in the Philippines, this thread (http://www.timog.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110 66) will be useful. Goodluck with your studies.
p.s. no text speak in Timog Forum, please, it's written in the Rules (http://www.timog.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1607) .

Dear Dcat san and all sempais out there,
Again, thank you very much to all great Filipino students out there who share their experiences in this forum. I wish to partake in your group someday.
Ps. Tsaka ung friend nung friend ko e nasa Japan din ngayon as Monbusho scholar in the field of social sciences..

Its true that the undergrad category screening is the most difficult (sa hundreds na nag aapply, usually five to eight lang ang pumapasa sa qual. exam including the interview but amongst them, usually isa lang ang nakukuha and minsan tulad last year wala pang kinuha) pero kaya mo yan... Just believe in yourself and prepare for the exam well.
Sa category na social science, the math part is not as complicated as the one found in the nat.sci category (few questions lang naman ang iniba pero mahirap talaga yung sa nat sci). Ang balita ko ang mahirap daw sa social science is yung World History kaya start ka na rin mag aral ng world history.
Idagdag ko lang din na its really true that japanese language proficiency is really an ADVANTAGE (plus points siya talaga) kaya sana start equipping yourself na rin sa Nihonggo. Although, for reference purposes lang siya kasi yung score mo sa core subjects like english, math, etc ang mag mamatter, may plus points sya sa final selection in tokyo if they see na marunong ka na magnihonggo.
To the other aspiring undergrad applicants:
kay yuki,,, good luck sa yo and tama yung ginawa mo na you did not lose hope and magtry ka pa rin. At least you already have the experience and admittedly, iba talaga yung feeling pag first time ka nag exam as compare sa second time... Prepare well and good luck din.
Sa iba pa na mageexam, good luck and dont forget the documents na kailangan isubmit. if may maitutulong ako sa inyo, im willing to answer your questions basta alam ko yung sagot...
Good luck uli and Minna de ganbatte kudasai. :)

Hi, guys. (I'm new. :D)
I'm interested in the Research scholarship, and I'm thinking of applying this year, but I just have a few questions I'd like cleared up.
1. I'm still in my 3rd year of uni, and I haven't started a thesis or anything like that. So my main problem is that I have no idea where to start with a project proposal. Anybody have tips?
2. Does the Japanese government prefer research topics that are relevant to Japan or is at an "anything goes" kind of thing? My major isn't really conducive to application: I'm doing pure maths, and as far as I know, outside of the academe, there's really nothing one can do with it. (Yes, it also depresses me sometimes. haha.)
3. I'm not currently a student of a university in the Philippines, although I am Filipino and a student. Will that detract from my chances of getting the scholarship? Am I even allowed to apply?
4. When submitting an application, is it better to specify which university I want to get admitted to? What are the chances of actually getting that university? Also the application form has spaces to write down potential supervisors: are these supervisors that I should have spoken to beforehand (and thus have an "understanding" with), or do I just go to uni websites and look for professors that seem to be doing interesting research topics?
5. Will the interview and exam be held on the same day? When do you know if you've passed the screening or whatever?
6. What options are available after finishing the research student term? I've read that most students go on to master's/doctorate, but what about after that?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance, everyone!

hi everyone.
i am new here.
I am from the Philippines.
I am 17 and will apply for the MONBUKAGAKUSHO scholarship for 2009. I am looking for an advice from those in Japan now under this scholarship..
I have some questions..
1. What is the first thing to do when you arrive in Japan?. Will somebody pick you up at the airport?
2. Will you look for your dormitory yourself?
3. Is it very hard to study there?. I mean, as in hard.
4. I have a friend who will apply too. Is it possible that if we choose the same course we can be on the same school?.
5. Is there a maintaining grade so that you will still have the scholarship?
6. I'm planning to apply for college of technology. What are the subjects needed to be reviewed for the exam?. I'm planning to start reviewing now.
Thanks for those who will be able to answer.. It will be of great help to me. Thank you thank you!! Hope to get accepted and see other scholars there!

hullo chichi!
very much welcome to Timog Forum. you're very young, and that's very well so you have better chances of getting yourself a scholarship. With regards to your question let me answer them one by one.
1. What is the first thing to do when you arrive in Japan?. Will somebody pick you up at the airport?
As of this year, we know for sure that when newly awarded scholars arrive at the airport here in Japan, no one will pick you up. This is different from the past years in which there were some Monbukagakusho officers who were there at the airport waiting for newly awarded scholars to arrive with ¥25,000 at hand to give each student. Now, even the arrival allowance seems to have disappeared.
2. Will you look for your dormitory yourself?
Usually newly-arrived scholars will have a dormitory ready to occupy before they come to Japan.
3. Is it very hard to study there?. I mean, as in hard.
Hardness depends on the person. If you don't like studying it will be easy, but if you want to do your best then it will be difficult.
4. I have a friend who will apply too. Is it possible that if we choose the same course we can be on the same school?.
It depends on the scholarship program. Undergraduate scholars will be sent to either Tokyo University of Foreign Studies or Osaka University. If both of you passed you may be sent to the same location, or maybe not. If you were indeed sent to the same university, you will study Japanese language for one year, and compete with everybody else to enter your preferred university where you'll get your bachelor's degree. A lot of things may happen in a year, but if you and your friend are really determined to be together and both of you are willing to give your best then it is highly possible.
5. Is there a maintaining grade so that you will still have the scholarship?
As far as I know, there's is none. After being awarded the scholarship you are free to do whatever you like, as long as you don't fail any prerequisite courses you have.
6. I'm planning to apply for college of technology. What are the subjects needed to be reviewed for the exam?. I'm planning to start reviewing now.
College of technology means that you'll be entering the sciences. So it means that you have to prepare for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and maybe Biology. Exams on these subjects are pretty difficult - many examinees have said throughout the years - so work hard and lots of luck to you! http://www.timog.com/gallery/files/7/icon_wink.gif

-it's fine with me if we are not sent to the same school as long as our places are near with each other. So that I have someone to talk to. hehehe:D

-this relieved me. at last! Pressure will be lessened unlike in our school today.. there are lots of grade requirement.. But I managed to meet them. :)

-yeah.. sounds very difficult.. i guess math doesn't like me at all. but I will try my best.. I never failed math my whole life but I just don't excel on it. haha. anyways.. is the test multiple choice? about how many items?.
Thanks for answering dcat!! I feel the urge of really being serious on this one. Thanks again!! :):)

no problem! :)

don't worry, you'll have many seniors or sempais who will be glad to pick you up when you arrive to help you settle easily. those who are coming this year are scheduled to be picked up by many volunteers.

you'll meet so many people in your life here in Japan, and the net is so much more convenient nowadays that you could have a whole day's conversation with your friend as if she's beside you all day. you could hang out here with us too. http://www.timog.com/gallery/files/7/icon_wink.gif

haven't you considered taking social science course? it will be easier, world history is fun and mostly memorization, and if you say you're ok with math then a bit more of studying might get you farther than those math exams in the sciences, and English, now that's difficult.

Thanks for answering dcat!! I feel the urge of really being serious on this one. Thanks again!! :):)
in addition to what dcat said, if you are applying for the college of tech, please focus on the sciences and math especially PHYSICS and CHEMISTRY.. (no need to study BIOLOGY), mas madali lang yung exams dito unlike sa undergraduate (no need to study BIOLOGY), mas madali lang yung exams dito unlike sa undergraduate...
Second point, its good that you are anticipating what will happen if nakapasa ka pero advise ko lang, better not think of those muna and instead prepare for the exam first kasi very stiff talaga siya. And sometimes, if we think too much of those already, we might get disappointed at the end kasi baka mamaya hindi pa tayo magqualify sa exam. May mga orientation naman and the partner university where you will be placed will email you regarding everything about japan, your accomodation and how you will reach the university (sa undergraduate, may sumusundo talaga galing sa university).
In short, ----one step at a time lang, think first of the requirements and the exam before putting too much thought on the arrival concerns that you have... Wish you luck when you take the exam and all those who are taking.
Tip ko lang sa mga undergrad, college of tech and senmon gakkou, please aralin nyo yung mga previous questions so that you will have a gut feel of what kind of questions they usually asks. And that means, hindi lang yung exam last year pati yung exams ng PREVIOUS years. Di sila usually nag uulit ng tanong but you will have a more general and complete thought kung pano sila magbigay ng tanong.
Ganbatte yo!

-social science is under undergraduate category tama po? as of now po kasi I have 11 years of formal education pa lang po. I am going for 2nd yr college sa pasukan, if kasama na rin sa bilang yun, I will have total of 12. Pwede na po ba yun sa undergrad?

Hi, seems this forum is more filipino friendly than any other forums about mext scholarship I have encountered so far.;)
I'm also applying for the year 2009 mext scholarship.
Research program balak ko. Just have few questions na baka pwede pong may makasagot:
1. I had undergradute degree in Fine Arts, and I had two years study for M.A. in Philippine Studies at UP hindi ko muna tinapos kasi libre dito sa Mombukagakusho.:D... what field of study and study program should I put in application form?..pang FA ba o pang Phil Stud?
2. I want to bring my family as dependent...do we need documents stating that they are my legitimate family? like marriage contract which we don't have.
3. Where can I find sample of abstract thesis or proposal na pwede ko maging guide?
4. Should my research proposal in connection with my FA course or Phil Stud...since I have degree in FA but Phil stud ang latest. It made me confuse
hullo limue! :)
Welcome to Timog Forum. Let me answer your question one by one:
It depends on you. What do you want to study? Your studies will decide your future, so what do you want to do after you finish your graduate studies?
2. I want to bring my family as dependent...do we need documents stating that they are my legitimate family? like marriage contract which we don't have.
Well you couldn't bring your wife/husband if you don't have a marriage contract. By the time you apply for your spouse's visa, how would you prove you're married and have a family if you don't have a marriage contract? If you mean to bring your children that's a different thing, but i guess you will have to produce an official document saying they're your children.
3. Where can I find sample of abstract thesis or proposal na pwede ko maging guide?
Can't you find one at UP? You're suppose to know about all these since you've been to graduate school already for a couple of years. Visit your closest professor whose research interest coincides with yours and ask for an advice. Most usually they know what's hot and what's still left "unresearched." Remember, the most important criteria in a research proposal is the research's significance (can it add value to a body of knowledge), feasibility (is it doable, or just an idea unrealistically conjured from baseless optimism), and uniqueness (your research must be distinguishable from all other past researches). All these must be clearly laid down on a well written Research Design.
4. Should my research proposal in connection with my FA course or Phil Stud...since I have degree in FA but Phil stud ang latest. It made me confuse.
It's a very confusing world out there, indeed. But i guess we have to make up our minds eventually. This is your decision and your decision will define you and your life ahead. Only you could answer your own question.
Kyoto University, they say, is the second best university in Japan. Second or not, a lot of significant researches in Japan is being done there I'm sure. The last time I heard, Patricio Abinales (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=sea rch-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=abinales&x=0&y=0), one of the most important Filipino social scientists of our time, teaches there at Kyoto University. He teaches Southeast Asian socio-political studies, with the Philippines as his main interest and specialty. That's all I know about Kyoto University. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Kyoto's Fine Arts department.

Hello po sa lahat.
I'm so interested in becoming a scholar in japan...:D
I've always dreamed of studying there, and this might be the chance I'm waiting for..^^ so I have a few questions poh..:D
1. Other than MEXT scholarship, is there other scholarships offered in Japan? Private Orgs etc?
2. To those who were scholars / passed the tests, I'm curious, what were your grades' average when you were in highschool? 90, 91, 92... Do you get straight A's or what? :D
3. Yung titrahan nyo poh, are you going to pay for it using your stipend or the gov't. will pay for it? :D
4. After you finish your course, are you required to work in Japan? Coz SG scholarship requires you to work there for 2 years after grad..^^
5. How is the college life in Japan different from here? Mas madali ba or mahirap? (putting the language & culture barrier aside, educationally lang)
6. Is there currently any universities in Japan offering Interior Design course? Because that's what I was planning to take up.
7. After I've sent my application, kelan po ba ang exams?
8. So currently, I'm just going to become a Senior High School student, but I'm really planning for this ngaun palang. Di naman aq masyado nageexpect, but at least, I want to try. I'm born in Feb '92, so when I step into college, when do I submit my application? During the last few months before March during my 1st year in college or in my 2nd in coll?
9. Another thing I'm curious of is that are Fashion Students there good? I mean, one of my *ahem* past dreams is to become a Fashion Designer or Stylist of some sort, so if the Fashion Students there get good futures, I might be willing to take the risk of taking that course which I have dreamed of long ago.
10. So and Special Training students ay hindi po makapipili kung saan sila mag-aaral diba? But, would it make a difference if they get good test results?
11. When is the good time to start studying Japanese? Kasi I can't go to the nihonggo centers in Manila since sa Las Piñas pa aq... -.-
I mean, from what month to what ang classes and when ang sembreaks etc.
Pasensya na po at isang doesna kong tanong... marami kasi akong gustong malaman eh..^^ hehe..:D
Anyways, I checked the sample test, and if that really was the test given in 2006, then I think I "might" be able to do this. Math lang ang problem q... haha.. I easily get mental blocks when it comes to numbers...^^

2. To those who were scholars / passed the tests, I'm curious, what were your grades' average when you were in highschool? 90, 91, 92... Do you get straight A's or what? :D
no, it is not a basis para makakuha ng scholarship. it is the qualifying exam na ibibigay sa june ang basis talaga nila.... but you should have a good college grade for you to qualify sa qualifying exam na ibibigay nila... flat A is not an assurance kasi international pooling ang gagawin meaning, thats what i mean kasi may kakilala akong kahit ang tatataas talaga ng grade pero sumemplang naman sa qualifying exam.... :(
3. Yung titrahan nyo poh, are you going to pay for it using your stipend or the gov't. will pay for it? :D
yup, you have to pay it with your stipend but still, ok pa rin naman kasi medyo mura naman yung ibibigay sa inyo ng monbusho na rental expense..:)
4. After you finish your course, are you required to work in Japan? Coz SG scholarship requires you to work there for 2 years after grad..^^
no, that is the difference with the singaporean scholarship, hindi required na magtrabaho dito after you graduate. nasa yo ang decision whether to go back and serve the country or kung ano gusto mo.
5. How is the college life in Japan different from here? Mas madali ba or mahirap? (putting the language & culture barrier aside, educationally lang)
medyo mahirap, but i dont have the right to speak about it generally kasi bago pa lang ako, but as of now, it is really competitive and ang akala ko noon ay marami sa mga scholars ang walang alam sa nihongo (we will start from scratch) pero i was wrong kasi halos lahat ng pumasa this year ay may SOLID background na sa Nihongo and lugi ang isang foreign scholar na walang alam sa language kasi may edge na agad ang karamihan over sa yo ifever....
pero friendly yung mga tao, you can easily gain friends... mahirap sa mahirap kasi you are studying biology and chem and math in nihongo but its manageable as of now....(good thing nakapag high school ako sa chinese school kaya medyo nakatulong yung kanji although medyo iba ng kaunti}})
6. Is there currently any universities in Japan offering Interior Design course? Because that's what I was planning to take up.
sorry i dont know much about it.
7. After I've sent my application, kelan po ba ang exams?
around june if nag qualify ka to take the exam..
8. So currently, I'm just going to become a Senior High School student, but I'm really planning for this ngaun palang. Di naman aq masyado nageexpect, but at least, I want to try. I'm born in Feb '92, so when I step into college, when do I submit my application? During the last few months before March during my 1st year in college or in my 2nd in coll?
mas ok kung 2nd year kasi medyo marami ka na ring napulot from your college but its all up to you.
9. Another thing I'm curious of is that are Fashion Students there good? I mean, one of my *ahem* past dreams is to become a Fashion Designer or Stylist of some sort, so if the Fashion Students there get good futures, I might be willing to take the risk of taking that course which I have dreamed of long ago.
yung kasama ko ay nasa senmon gakkou and ang course niya ay fashion.... she is now in osaka for her language training and she is really kind.... sabi niya madali lang daw yung exam nila kasi 2 lang yung kailangan mong kunin, math and english unlike sa college of tech--- math, chem or physics, english and for the undergrad- math, chem, bio or physics, english. aside from that mas kaunti lang yung kumukuha ng senmon gakkou so less competition in a way unlike sa hundred plus na kumukuha yearly sa ibang category.
10. So and Special Training students ay hindi po makapipili kung saan sila mag-aaral diba? But, would it make a difference if they get good test results?
kahit naman sa undergrad, di rin kami makakapili.... it will depend on the score and performance na meron kami sa 1st year namin dito...
11. When is the good time to start studying Japanese? Kasi I can't go to the nihonggo centers in Manila since sa Las Piñas pa aq... -.-
di madali ang nihongo kaya i think you should better start it now... i did a self study for one year (nanghiram ako ng libro sa school ko---although nihongo is not part of my course because im in a science course in lasalle back then) kung may free time ako, nagbabasa ako ng nihongo for starters and yung kanji ko, medyo ok naman kasi galing nga ako sa chinese school kaya grammar na lang ang inaral ko.... if you want, gayahin mo yung style ko kasi medyo mahal yung sa nihongo center and wala akong time kasi full sched din ako nun...
nasa yo pa rin.... pero sabihin ko lang sa yo, i should have not get the scholarship if it wasnt because of my nihongo proficiency---kaya ibig sabihin malaking bearing na ngayon ang nihongo knowledge sa application. although wala siya sa computation ng qualifying score, it will help a lot kasi yung case ko, hindi ako yung highest sa mga nag qualify sa final selection (3rd lang ang score ko but my proficiency certificate was considered, kumbaga swerte lang ang kinapitan ko...) kaya ang maipapayo ko, do not take for granted yung nihongo kasi makakapitan nyo yun talaga.
I mean, from what month to what ang classes and when ang sembreaks etc.
august and march and latter part of december ang bakasyon dito... usually 9 to 4 kami pero meron din 9 to 6 ang pasok. para siyang trisem kasi may winter term, fall term and spring term.
Final message ko lang, good luck sa application... just like before, i want to reiterate that now is too early for you to think of those problems kasi wala ka pa nga sa susunod na step... you should take it easily kasi baka madisappoint ka dahil sa sobrang excitement mo. yung mga tanong mo, natanong ko lang yan after na ng notification letter na aalis ako sa april... but anyways, good luck and kung may kulang pa sa sinabi ko, si master dcat na bahala. binibigay ko lahat nga alam ko kasi gusto ko na maraming Pilipino ang makuha next year or sa susunod pa na taon... kasi yung kaso ko dito mahirap, wala akong sempai dito kasi walang Filipino na nakapasa last year and yung mga nakapasa naman last last year, wala na sa tokyo, nasa ibang part na ng japan... and so far, eto yung mga tips na sa tingin ko makakatulong sa inyo para makakuha scholarship... i hope nakatulong and nasagot ko yung mga tanong mo although its a bit early for you to ask those questions...:)

Medyo excited nga po ako, hehe, pro nde rin naman aq nageexpect masyado, try q lang..^^ pro xempre, if anything goes wrong, at least medyo alam q na anhg pasikot sikot on how it goes..:D may pagka OCD aq sa ganito.. hehe...:D I'm not a studious person, pero I get good grades naman, sana lang mamaintain q pagdating ng college. :D i have to know these things now, kasi in case na hindi aq pumasa sa MEXT, makakahanap na aq ng ibang alternatives...:D
question for holyfennel
i can't help but ask these questions poh. sana okey lang..^^
and what were your usual grades during college? :D
aiun, kase if I have an idea how good/competitive ang scholars dun, i might as well try to work harder. as i've said, tamad aq, pero if I know something is hard, madali lang sa loob q mag-aral..:D
anyway, i hav strong perseverance nmn, so if ever hindi aq pumasa sa first try, i might try and try again.. pag di tlga, then i know it's not for me..:D
Oh, and yung sample test po ba nung '06, for those who took it, ganun tlga yung test? :D
salamat po ulit! :D

usually 100 binibigyan nila... most of them sa research and teacher training... 95 % of the scholars are in those field. this year 1 sa undegrad at 1 rin sa senmon gakkou ang binigyan and 1 sa japanese studies, wala sa college of technology. last year was worse kasi 0 undegrad ang binigyan, pero may binigyan naman din sa senmon gakkou at college of technology.
kay alexxie, ganun talaga yung exam sa 2006. depende talaga sa score pero base sa info na alam ko, usually daw 1 or 2 na lang ang binibigyan sa undergrad and minsan wala pa... suwerte yung mga dati na umabot pa raw na 5 filipinos ang pinapadala for undegrad.... kasi icocompare pa yung score mo sa ibang nationalities.... kung mas mataas sila sa yo then, kahit nirecommend ka na ng embassy, di ka pa rin bibigyan sa final selection kaya ganun kaserious yung advice ko na galingan nyo sa exam. i hope you wont take it badly....
gusto ko talaga na magconcentrate muna kayo sa exam kasi it really is the bulk of the selection kahit tanong nyo pa kay ate ria sa japanese embassy.... and start learning japanese na rin as in the real japanese grammar lessons and not the anime one.... malaki talaga maitutulong nun....
balita ko yung taga lasalle na nakakuha ng pinakamataas na score last year ay hindi muna magaapply ngayon kaya i think mas maganda yung chance ng mga kukuha ngayon. next year na raw siya kukuha.... he obtained a score of 300/400 and that is really high... kukuha raw muna siya ng proficiency this year. good luck sa inyo:):)

as far as i know, it really depends sa rankings ng nag aapply sa saan mang sulok ng mundo na may embassy ang Japan in regards of senmon, kousen at undergrad studies.

huwaw! ang onti ng kunukuha nila.. regardin dun, medyo mhirap pla aq makapasa nun, im not the type to get the highest score (excet pag english) on exams..:D
BTW, i checked the JASSO (may ibang scholarships din cla lam q weh) site which tells abt MEXT, naka-indicate dun kung ilang slots they have available for each category...
It goes like this:
Young Leaders Program (Law, BSBA, Public Admin, Medcal Admin, Local Gov't)
no. of grantees = 70, monthly allowance = JPY258000 (waw, ang laki!)
Research Students (i guess i don't need to indicate this one)
no. of grantees = 4030 (i guess this tells bakit most that pass are reasearch students), monthly allowance = JPY172000
Teacher Training Students
no. of grantees = 155, monthly allowance = JPY172000
Undergraduate Students
no. of grantees = 560, monthly allowance = JPY134000
College of Technology Students
no. of grantees = 90, monthly allowance = same sa undergrad
Professional Training Students
no. of grantees = 110, monthly allowance = same sa undergrad
Japanese Studies Students
no. of grantees = 340, monthly allowance = same sa undergrad
So, according to the data gathered, mas marami ang ang grantees ng Undergrad at Japnese Studies, and the Professional/Special Training and Tech students doesn't fall much behind... What I'm not sure of is that if those numbers are in general na (as in all the countries), which I guess is general na nga. Pero bakit kaunti lang nakukuha (sabi nyo nga poh, 1 or 2 or minasan wala pa) pero marami namang slots. And yung TTS students as holyfennel mentioned ay isa sa most na tinatanggap / nakukuha sa scholarships where in fact mas marami ang slots ng iba and the other categories are just lower by a small number... how did that happen? holyfennel mentioned that minsan ng 1 lang sa undergrad where in fact mas marami ang slots duon... hmm... bakit poh kaya? Bigger slots increases the number of possible scholars per country, but in this case, nde ata nangyari and mas madami pa ang nakuha sa lower num of slot like the teacher training...

yan din ang akala ko nung una.... i saw that website na pinagkunan mo last last year pa, do you know when was it last updated.... sometimes the things indicated in the website are so ideal and it doesnot reflect the true numbers.... for example, the website is telling us that they are giving 560 slots whereinfact, ang nasa Tokyo gaidai na kasama ko ngayon ay 60 lang... Including me its 61.... i dont where are the 499 na sinasabi sa website.... merong ibang student sa Osaka gaidai, na not more than 100 din na sabi ng Indonesian friend ko dito... so is it really 560???? well based from last year and in my year... apparently it is not.... hindi natin alam kung yung slot na yun ay even for our year or not kasi iba rin ang total number ng mga tinatanggap every year so we should not assume na may 500 slots na available... we should not be so confident enough about the slot thing kasi yun din yung inisip ko before na since marami naman palang slot, malaki yung chance ng mga nakapasok na sa interview and that is yung mga nagqualify na sa exam (one step higher), pero hindi pala GANUN.. if you want to check for the validity of what i am saying. you can always call the japanese embassy and ask ate ria and see what she will have to tell you about kung ilan ang binigyan na undergrad and teacher training scholarships for the past 4 years..:)
mahirap maintindihan ang sinasabi ko unless naexperience mo na talaga yung application process.... masarap isipin yung mga what ifs pag nakakuha ka na ng slot. but that slot is not as ideal as it seems. i think alam yun ng mga nakakuha na ng exams.
katulad nga ng sinabi iseijin, it depends on the ranking. for a more concrete example ng sinasabi, para mas maliwanag.... for example may 15 slots.... ang naglalaban laban dito ay mongolia, vietnam and the philippines.... so ideally 5 per country ang slot.... maganda sana pag ganun kasi yung 5 slot na yun ang paglalaban labanan ng mga Filipino.... but the problem is that yung 15 slots na yun ay open for all the 3 countries...... kumbaga, all of them are fighting for the 15 slots, kaya nga international pooling... and sadly, vietnamese and the mongolians are really good in math kaya usually ang nangyayari ay out of the 15 slots, kapag nirank na, 7 vietnamese are being granted a slot (intead of the ideal 5) and 6 mongolians are getting the slots (instead of 5) and 2 are given to the Filipinos (instead of 5)... I hope you get the point... and last year ata, hindi nakapasok sa ranking ang mga Filipino although 7 yung nirecommend ng embassy out of the hundreds na nasala na sa exams......
so kahit ganun pa rin.... kahit na ideal masyado yung nasa website far from the real 61 in tokyo gaidai as undegrad scholars (560 di ba kamo), good luck pa rin sa application mo kasi baka nga naman biglang maging 560 sa taon mo!.... sa mga nakakuha na ng exam like kay yuki na magtatry uli (tama yung attitude mo, 2nd try ko rin nakuha tong scholarship na to kaya dont give up)..... good luck sa preparation mo and i hope magkita kita tayo dito sa april. alam mo na nman yung flow ng exam di ba, kaya i think it will not be a problem anymore.... jaa mata!

^^wow. that sucks bad. haha.
Sayang! tsktsktsk. if you could trade places nga lang sana..-.- anyway, thanks fo sa mga advice! :D
I'll keep on trying (possibly hanggang hindi na ako qualified. wag nmn sana. lol) to take the tests at asna nga mangyari ang himala na sinasabi ni holyfennel! malay mo, dumami bigla ang grantees. lol. basta cguru kung after many tries hindi parin pumasa, may it isn't really for me...^^ baka may ibang plans pa c God para sakin, pero as of now, i'll just try my best!
